Running out of customers













"Lack of innovation'. Merck is just doing more of the same crap they did back when they were hauling in profits hand over fist. Actually merck was never much good at innovation outside their rather limited core technical capabilities (which were, in contrast, impressive). Meanwhile, they got so arrogant that they expected that great drugs would just keep coming simply because they were Merck. For a while, the name Merck would certainly attract top technical talent, one of the ingredients in keeping a solid pipeline. But the ineptness of the business leaders of Merck even overwhelmed the technical talent pool Merck used to have. And certainly everyone knows that the name Merck means nothing to any technical person anymore. They truly have killed the goose that laid the golden eggs. And the top leaders laughed while they fed on that goose.

It is all about marketing and sales, R&D fails to get the attention it needs for many years now. Just because you invest money does not mean your going to get well researched programs. This is the problem with R&D; the leadership, the scientific savy, and the talent evaluation is just not there. There are to many inept managers that lead divisions and therapy areas that it is almost impossible to turn around. When you get this big it is hard to do the right talent searching because the leadership should not be there in the first place. How do I know this? Peter Kim is still with the company leading MRL
