depends on the state. the state i live in they have you estimate the length of time the severance was supposed to last based on your previous salary before you can apply for unemployment. for many people thats a long time. but most people dont read all the exclusion criteria for unemployment and in reality lie to the government which is a crime. i know several merck reps who got severances then immediately got unemployment because they chose to lie about the size of the severance package on the unemployment application. its state by state but in reality there is no state where unemployment is meant for people who got severance packages no matter if its lump sum or not. thats called cheating the system
