questions I don't want to ask HR

I'm working on my exit strategy and I have a couple of questions. If you stay until the end of the year do you still get the bonus or do you have to be around for the payout in March? Also I was wondering if there were any tips on the best way to leave. I expect that my boss will try and have me working until I actually turn in my card. Is there a good way to give notice and not suffer the consequences? I do want to keep things professional and "do the right thing" :)

I was in your shoes and left earlier this year! Don't worry about the bonus, you will get it no matter when you leave. It's a guarantee they will pay you for what you did which is different from my last pharma company. It will just be prorated from the day you leave. I was just honest with my letter, I mentioned I found a better opportunity. They will definitely check you out immediately but that's normal. Just have your exit strategy with a car, health insurance, etc already in place. Good luck, the one thing I can say is it's better companies out there than Amgen.

You are wrong about the bonus. If you announce you are leaving management can choose to give you nothing. As a manager, I have made this choice. When a manager goes into SAP to enter in the merit and bonus, each chooses how to divvy the pie.

When is the pie-divying choice cemented?

Here's the sad thing about the pie divvying...it's done before performance reviews are even entered. So it tells you that your write up and goals mean nothing except as a feedback vehicle. The "leaders" sit in a room and decide your scores, each debating against your boss so they can have more of the pie. It's a very, very flawed system. Pie divvying is beginning soon and will be done before Christmas break. See the HR portal for the calendar.

I have managed both in house and outside sales, the bonus payout is up to the manager on both ends. if the person is a regretable loss, I usually pay out the bonus - a little on the low end, because I use that money to reward people who are still with me on the team. as far as field sales people go, if they are a good person who i like and trust i will pay them, if they have been on my team under a year and have not really done much I will cut the string and not pay them.

Mrg discretion on the payout. Leave in good standing and you may have to work some of the notice time. Bad rep who will "sour" the territory-gone in a day! All the best-more would follow if they had the backing-wish I could.

Bonus numbers are locked into SAP mid February.
Announce your departure late Feb

Interesting......

I was fired over a year ago and am in Field Sales. I was #1 in my Division on most counts (for example % to quota), but was horribly undermined by my Manager and this Managers boss (was Director) to where I was questioned:

Why I filled my gas in one town yet spent my whole day in another town according to computer call records...
Why did my cell phone records indicate I was making cell phone calls in one zip yet had a computer calls indicating I was in another area 2 towns over for the whole day...

It just got worse from there. Horrific IMHO. This was for calls I made 8 months earlier, and when I saw the notebook of records my Manager had I knew it was over. Yep, instead of working with my Manager that day, I was unexpectedly joined as well by my Director and HR was telecommed in...ALthough I was on the shit list with my DM for months, I really thought my numbers would carry the day.....

Anyway, I digress.

The point is, I was paid my full bonus for the previous quarter I worked 2 months later, and 5 months later I received my "full" pro-rated bonus (I worked for about 1 full month into the next quarter before D-Day.

If my Manager had a say in my getting my full bonus, I will believe in Santa Claus and buy the Brooklyn Bridge. I think there are rules in place that you get the bonus you are derserved on a pro-rated basis.

Sales force bonus process is different than the other workforce. Sales receive their bonuses, other staff may or may not at managers' discretion.
