Promotions

I can’t believe the promotions that happen at Lilly! There’s a guy on our team that was promoted to Executive Rep. and every time I call him he is complaining!! Complains about everything Lilly and everything he is expected to do for his job! I’ve worked for a few pharma companies and I can say that Lilly’s promotion process needs some improvement!

The promotion process here is a real point of frustration for a lot of people. Everybody knows how much it sucks yet no one will change it.
Mean while people either leave for another company or they stay at Lilly & do just enough to keep their job because the promotion process is a ridiculous joke & commissions are largely based off of the performance your 12-15 district teammates.

so why try?

Usually, the people that get promoted at Lilly are the ones working less then anyone. They have been luck to have a partner who works hard and/or they have a manager whose ass they’ve kissed resulting in the promotion. Lilly promotions are a joke. Unlike other companies who promote based on performance, Lilly promotes based on whose a favorite of manager.

This… 100%

It’s all political. How many asses did you kiss, do you have enough managers that like you, etc. Not performances based. If they want to promote you then they will find a way to promote you. If nit then they’ll always give you a BS reason that they didn’t promote you.

Just a game of favorites & who’s turn is it

Of course it’s not the fact that you losers are average at best

Maybe a few are, but sadly they are mostly correct. Promotions across the company are very political and based on who likes you and more importantly who doesn’t. I had a hell of a time getting some of the most productive and effective people promoted when I was in middle management. It was gross to see the dirty games that were played and the crappy people who would stab others in the back but were buddy buddy w the VP get promoted.

Yep…like a group of DSMs that won’t vote for another DSMs because they don’t like that DSM. Or DSMs voting fir each other’s reps just because the DSMs are friends and vote to help each other.

It is ALL political. It’s nit based on the most deserving rep. That’s why the sales force stays pissed.

This is partially true as long as you consider these other factors;

There are limited number of promotions available (everyone can’t be promoted)

Each DM wants their reps to be promoted (if they are deserving based on sales performance and team contribution)

Each member of the DM team gets a “vote” on who gets promoted after hearing each DM plead their case on behalf of their rep

The AVP can be a tie breaker

So, yes..it can be somewhat political. Your DSM needs to plead your case to the “jury” of other biased DSM’s based on the evidence within your promotional document.

If you don’t give your DSM enough “ammo” to defend your case or your DSM is new and doesn’t feel comfortable challenging their peers and “standing up for you” ..promotion is very unlikely.

so the ability of your manager to be more popular than others managers to gain you votes for a promotion that you worked hard for and went above and beyond for is voted on by managers whom may have worse numbers than you. Yeah its “somewhat” political. You I can see are a manager with alot of turnover.

Yep

And voting DSMs will vote for their friend DSMs to help each other.

Then it’s which DSMs have done favors for other DSMs or which DSMs are besties with each other. Not much to do with the rep
