Potential New Sales Rep

Hello,

I may be receiving an offer as a new sales rep at AstraZeneca. I'm also interviewing with GlaxoSmithKline. Can you give me any insight as to which would be the best company to get started in pharma sales with?
Thanks!

Kid,

Neither. This profession is disappearing at an alarming rate. You are basically trying to become a dinosaur trainer a couple of years prior to the asteroid hitting. If you are looking for a fun gig for a couple years that will provide you with virtually zero transferable skills, than by all means welcome aboard. However, if you are looking for a career, something that you can actually do for more than the next few years, than run away from this industry fast... you've got to be able to find something more rewarding and stable than this.

Most Pharmaceutical companies are having a rough go of it these days. Job stability anywhere can be iffy.

This was reported in May. "GSK CEO Andrew Witty told investors that buying a big company such as AstraZeneca would be "very distracting" at a time when GSK's own pipeline of experimental drugs enters a potentially rich period."

Essentially you would potentially consider a buy if you believed the return on investment would satisfy investors or your own pipeline would be supplemented.

Good luck with your decision.

Bad analogy. The asteroid hit was one single catastrophic event that upset a thriving situation. Pharma has been dying a death of a thousand cuts for about 8 years now, with no end (no new products) in sight.

All previous posters ate giving true and real advice. I would look elsewhere outside thus industry. We all including managers are all riding until the wheels fall off. Save yourself the training and uncertainty of if you will have a job or not in the next 6 months.

The hell they put you through at training,is not worth the job, because in both cases you are treated like sh##.

I would suggest talking to the reps that have been laid off from both companies. It's an okay temporary job with either company, but remember that companies are not loyal to the reps these days. There is a good chance with either company that you will be laid off within 5 years and then get stuck in contract sales hell.

Whatever you choose, have a good back up plan including an alternate career and a shitload of money saved.
