Last year Abbott Labs shed hundreds of jobs from it's Vascular Division locations in Temecula,
Redwood City, and Santa Clara, California
California's role as a center for mass manufacturing appears to be shrinking, as large companies increasingly move that function to countries like Ireland and Costa Rica, or other parts of the U.S. to reduce costs, i.e. labor.
In April of this year Abbott Labs eliminated 180 IT workers in Illinois and outsourced their jobs to Wipro, a major India based IT company.
With the Abbott/STJ takeover currently in the transition phase it seems inevitable that more layoffs in the coming months will become the status quo. Now it is just a question of when, who, how many, and where these layoffs will occur.
