Position w/ Shire

I've been in contact with a recruiter for an ADHD position with Shire in the Southeast, now waiting on a phone call from HR. I currently have no experience in pharma, but really want to break into the pharma/medical industry. A few questions:

1. Is a specialty position like this a good "entry" opportunity into the industry?
2. For others who have made the transition into pharma from other B2B jobs, is the transition fairly smooth? Obviously, there's the product knowledge side of things, but is the sales process similar?
3. How is turnover with the company?
4. I see a lot on the board about potential M & A activity, which seems to be quite common in the industry based on my research. Is this something that employees are worried about, or is this common?

Any other insight or advice would be much appreciated.....Thanks!

1. This is not a "speciality" position. The industry is shrinking.
2. Sales process couldn't be farther from a B2B job. If you enjoy selling and earning new business. Pharma isnt for you. If you like being micromanaged and told what to do, pharma is a good place.
3. Turnover low - if you are a robot and like going to the same accounts every week with no new information. This is your job.
4. Common

There are some really good territories... Just do your homework

First of all, I think they are looking to hire people with prior pharma experience so you would be lucky if you get the opportunity to interview. Secondly, Shire is a great place to work and the ADHD division sells 2 great products...which really makes the job easier and more fun. Thirdly, specialty is the best place to be in pharma. Selling to primary care sucks which is what entry level pharma is usually about.

Turnover is low, most people who leave try to come back and of course cannot get their job back. Rumors of M&A are out there but I think highly unlikely. Shire is doing a lot of acquiring of other companies these days and has a strong future.

I've been a rep here for 5 years and I'm happy. I make good money, think our products are great and all those negative people out there should leave if they are so disgruntled. I don't know much about "Totty" except that he is a zone director so not someone you would deal with very often anyway.

No worries if you have no pharma experiene Shire is the company for you you will do well they actually screen out resumes in HR that show pharma experience. Take the job then move on to a real company.

Shire prefers the bend the rep over and shove unattainable goal metrics and micromanaging candy asses for bosses up your rear position. and no kissing first, against hr policy.
