Position Comparison

Hi all. Although I'm currently a competitor at Medtronic, I haven't come here to cause any issues.. some honest insight is simply being requested.

A friend of mine recently left my company as a cardiac device Sales Representative to become a Sales Representative at SJM. In approximately two years, she went from being a Sales Rep to a "CRM Territory Manager." She's been borderline bragging about how much "better" the company is from a working standpoint -- supposedly, she has tons of time off with a heck of a nice paycheck now. I've been enticed to jump ship and to come on over with you guys due to the info that I've been getting. Some questions:

1) Would anyone know where you're "Territory Manager" was in comparison to a Medtronic Manager (is it one of our District Service Managers, District Managers, Regional Vice Presidents, etc.)?

2) Supposedly she's making $220K - $300K per year (or, at least last year since she hasn't been there for too long at all). Does this seem as if it could be true? Does this position REALLY make that much?

3) How much would you believe that a Clinical Specialist that's been there for 5 years would make?

Typically, around here, Medtronic is seen as a more stable company, but SJM is known to pay more. I'm not quite sure which direction to go as of yet, so I was hoping that someone may be able to provide some information. Thank you!

The TM role is a sales position with responsibility over a small group of either sales associates or clinical rep. The base is $75K, which is $15K a year higher than the typical rep. Over the past 3 years the commission scale at SJM has been reduced by 20% to 30%. Based on the current plan you would still need to produce $3M to $3.5M in revenue in order to be in the mid $200K range. The merger with Abbott is a way to model the new organization into something more similar to MDT.

Thank you for the relevant response -- I appreciate the information! If $3M to $3.5M is necessary to be in the mid $200s then I'm sure she's doing better than I thought financially. Thanks again!

If they wanted you they would meet with you to answer these questions.

Not sure if this was meant to be a jab, but, if so, it was rather weak.

Anyway, it's not whether "they" wanted me or not as "they" have offered me a Clinical Specialist position in the past while I was still a MDT employee. Now that my friend is a TM, she's actually the one trying to get me to consider...and I'm starting to do so. So I already have "them" interested in me, but I wouldn't appreciate anyone besides my wife asking me how much I made per year. ;o)

Spoken like a true CS

Spoken like someone whose life goals have been deflated after realizing that they're nothing special. It's okay... Someone will give a damn one day.

But, yes, I have spoken like a true CS. One that has two options -- both being promotions -- and was looking into getting as much info as possible from everywhere that I could in an effort to decide which company to choose. I know that this site has parasites like the guy above on it, but you have to take the good with the bad. However, sadly, I do find his pettiness quite entertaining. Just another example of the realization that I'm doing quite well in my professional life for being as young as I am )

If you are 12, this makes sense

Cyberonics Neuromodulation pays better than them both Medtronic and St. Jude. Their CS base is between 75-85K and they hire anyone. Literally, I've heard of some coming from used car sales.. If that tells you anything about the company - you should get the point. Cyberonics is the most shady F**ked up company that pays the big $$$ to land people quick before those candidates get a chance to research anything about the company. And after a couple years of complete hell the get out, leaving a tarnished reputation in the industry and recruiters that don't even want to work with them strictly because of where they came from. Maybe any company has the "greener=money" pastures but an ethical company who cares shows to the surgeons and c-suite and makes a larger impact on AMY specific sales rep then a financial short lived gain.

And total comp for a first year CS is around 130-160 depending on territory size. And I'm not lying here- they still have some sales reps that make upwards of 400K in select territories - all doing illegal shit
