Pointless busy work : Friend or Foe?

With all the totally useless admin work we are asked to do, (and business "analysis" for that matter) how do reps feel about it? On one hand, it keeps their bosses employed, and keeps a paycheck coming for themselves, but it also makes the job completely ridiculous, meaningless, and essentially a waste of time...

I guess the real question is could their be any less meaningless work in the entire universe of jobs that pharma sales?

If they would just let people alone to go out and build relationships, things would work out fine...but no...the managers just have to intervene and make a mess of everything...

It's all part of the rigged job securtiy game where all the meaningless BS you do secures the jobs of others and in turn, this needed but unproductive function helps secure your job. Such a sweet deal but I'm uncertain about how long this game can endure our lack of real productivity as in new products. I'm sure there are other sham jobs out there that pay as well or better than pharma, especially in government, especially in Chicago...

Well said. Your busy administrative work, e.g., expense report, creates job security for your manager to view and approve it. Or he would not have office day and has to ride with the reps five days a week. It keeps the audit department gainfully staffed. Global Security thanks you. Someone are employed to run region wide and company wide expense reports too. Then there is the Fleet Administration. Or the people in charge of the teleconferences....

Don't hate the player, hate the game. Just leave your double wide trailer in the backwoods of Alabama and move to a northern city where there are more job opportunities, buck tooth billy bob.

Where did you get the idea I hate the player? That's a hoot. If you had any intuitive ability, you'd also have picked up on the northern city where I already live. That's some mensa mind you've got there champ.

I don't need to have a mensa mind to pick up on the fact that you are a pompous Douche bag hating on Chicago. If you don' like your job or this company, leave. Nobody will miss you, chump. I am sure there are plenty of opportunities in your northern city like bagging groceries or cleaning driver's Windows off the expressway. You appear to meet those qualifications mr.@ss clown.

So wrong again, champ. I happen to love Chicago, just not the corrupt political bs. But don't give up. Even a blind sow eventually stumbles upon an acorn.

If you were to add up the number of hours spent on conference calls/district conference calls /calls to CTL per his/her request all on weekly basis what would it add up to for loss of "sales time" in territoy? Any one care to fire up the calculator for a monthly loss of work hours. No way to make goal this way.

Some of the exchanges here is new to Merck. All the layoffs, micromanaging, stupid busy work have turned formerly cordial colleagues into animals. We used to feel bad someone left or was forced out. Now we quietly congratulated ourselves that it is not us.
