Pharmaceutical Sales Induced Stress Syndrome (PSISS) is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to pharmaceutical lay-offs, downsizing, and/or realignment events that result in psychological trauma. This event may involve the threat to oneself or to someone else’s psychological integrity, overwhelming the individual's ability to cope.
Diagnostic symptoms for PSISS include:
• flashbacks or nightmares of traumatic pharmaceutical experiences
• avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma such as sales rankings and manager ride-along
• paranoia that more cut-backs are coming
• decreased self-worth or sense of feeling trapped
• pondering new career options as a Starbuck’s Barista or pole dancer
Diagnostic criteria for PSISS require that the symptoms last more than one week and cause significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Review medication history to determine if anti-depressants, anti-anxiety, and/or insomnia prescriptions coincided with exposure to pharmaceutical sales induced stress. An increase in alcohol consumption may also be noted.
Treatment options: currently being reviewed by the FDA
