Pharma to device with Ethicon

Is Ethicon a good company to make the transition from pharma to device? Seems like the big money is elsewhere, but in terms of getting your foot into the door and gaining some experience, is it worthwhile? Do other device companies look at experience with Ethicon favorably, or does it become an experience that you have to "explain" to another company?

Former pharma rep and ex Ethicon Endo rep. here. Ethicon is a good company and ideal for getting your foot in the device door. You will gain great exposure to a variety of surgical specialties and key OR decision makers. You can make good money but a lot is out of your control. With that said, many higher tier device companies use Ethicon as a hunting grown for talent.

My advice is, get in, do two years, then start looking for a great opportunity to jump for smaller company, less BS and more pay.

Ethicon is considered to be an entry level medical device company. Ethicon hires many pharmaceutical reps and you can get some experience and then move on because the money is lower than most device jobs. Good luck.

All true. Left EES several years ago. In my best year I made 140k that came with alot of BS. Went to small start up and made 225k and was 10 of 35 reps and literally none of the toxic BS. If you are coming from big pharma, don't let the BS part scare you. You are already accustom to it... I say that to say I don't think it is any worse at EES than at any of the big pharma companies.

Agree with the above. It is more difficult to transition from a current device gig to Ethicon(big pharma). But if you are making the jump Ethicon has great training and is well regarded as a good place to gain experience. Good luck.

If you really want out of pharma or need a job, take a serious look at the associate position (if full line is not an option). The pay is not bad compared to starting pharma and most get promoted pretty quick (because term over is high). I would dare say that the associate position is really Ethicon's bench.

Yep , you sure did come from pharma. Validation EES does not hire sales people anymore . Higher salary, little comish. Old timers days are numbered

Ethicon Endosurgery has always been medical device on training wheels. Go to a real device company after you get your feet wet for 2 years at Ethicon Endosurgery. Best advice yet.

Last poster is either a die hard manager or a bottom of the barrel type. Look around you. This company has massive turnover from voluntary resignations. Where do you think these people went if there is no where to go?

Just as an example, the Detroit team has almost turned over 4 times in 7 years... 4 times in 7 years!!! And they just had another rep resign. This is not uncommon for EES. People quit this job everyday because it doesn't take long to realize you are over worked and under paid.

If you can't find another job with 2 years of EES on your resume it's because you have not tried or you are really just a poor interviewer.

You will get good training...a little over the top since it is usually taught by overzealous, inexperienced manager in training types. It is a very easy transition from pharma to Ethicon Endosurgery because the company is loaded with ex pharmaceutical reps. It is kind of known for that in the device energy and felt to be a good transition to get into a real medical device company once you have paid your dues there for two years. Don't be misled. There are places to go.

BS. Speaking for someone who works in the Midwest, the Detroit team hasn't had that type of turnover. There were people promoted and there are reps there that have been there for 5+ years.

A few of them were terminated because they were too lazy to leave their house and actually sell. Or they were placed on a performance plan and resigned because they knew that they were about to be canned.

Sell trocars? Staplers and endocutters? Really? How bout the majority of Ethicon salespeople who sit home and let the contract do the selling for them?

sit home? are you kidding me? I'm fighting to keep my business every f'ing day!! On top of that I'm not compensated accordingly which is why this job blows!!!

I'm out of here asap

Ethicon Inc is no better in Detroit.
