Pharma Sales - The Greatest Job in the History of Mankind

I never cease to be amazed that the drug companies pay people 100k a year
to work a few hours a day having lunch delivered in to doctor's offices. I mean, I get
that they don't want to lay off people so the managers can keep their corporate welfare
jobs, but doesn't anybody in these companies realize what a huge waste of resources it
is to have armies of drug reps still??

When you get in to the real world of jobs, (outside of Big Pharma) you realize what few
real skills you get being a drug rep, and how completely out of whack the compensation is
in that industry. It simply defies all logic.

I guess fleecing the public is a highly profitable endeavor, which enables them to compensate
people like they do?

Don't forget the company car.

The entire compensation package for the amount of effort and accountability is the best. No office job in the world would provide the freedom we get to take time off during the day. All this with a 4 year degree. Just hope the train keeps rolling for 12 more years.

The comp plan is good however look at other industries such as business services, IT and the like. Comp plans are similar, actually more autonomy due to lack of beuracratic regulations and CIAs. Not
to mention the ridiculous amount of micromanagement and BS tracking. As far as skill set....speak for yourself, I've worked in multiple industries and had various sales functions. You either have it or you don't so take your negativity and ignorance and promote it elsewhere. I will tell you this, life outside of this ridiculous organization is much better so sharpen your skills and prepare for a
rough landing because it's on the way. Merck no longer cares about its people, that is painfully obvious.

it is a great job, not a great career anymore...basically income/salary potential has been frozen and declining in real dollar terms for years now..close family member who was a rep (back when it was one rep/one territory) who recommended this career to me made 80,000 back in the 1980s, that basically $175,000 in today's money..99% of reps are not coming close to that number...Nice job still.

It is a pathetic excuse for a job. It is not actually a job because we don't do anything. However, what is good about it is the pay, but that doesn't make it a good job. Does anyone get any satisfaction from delivering lunch or getting signatures? It's a scam, it's a sham but I'll take the dollars from these fuckers whilst I can.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

The analysts have crunched the data and they do need us to protect their interests and "sell". Without us, their profits would not be as great, trust me.

Good try though.

The big difference...in those days you earned it. 7 am hospital displays, several dinner programs, 12 face-to-face office calls per day. Paperwork completed at night and on weekends. Now we seem to be spending less and less time with customers. We leave our houses at 9 and are home by 4. All administrative requirements are completed before 4 on Friday afternoon. We are probably making a lot more per hour than ever before just because we are not putting in the hours. The good news, that work/Life balance grid definitely favors Life. Maybe that's not a bad thing.

"take your negativity and ignorance and promote it elsewhere" What the heck are you talking about...what is negative or ignorant about calling pharma sales the greatest job ever for the money and time investment required? You think you are so clever huh Mr. "Multiple Industries?"

You sound like a bigger fraud than most of the Merck reps are...FU!

you are an idiot. the top reps work about 50 hours a week, and produce much more than they are paid. that is the truth, fool.

sound like fools to me if this is true..? As they said in the 'Nam, "It don't mean nuthin.'"

Pharma Sales is a joke and anyone who puts in more than the minimum. (ie. call Uber Eats for Deli)
is drinking far too much of the Kool Aid...

Why are you here if it is a joke?

Look, big pharma is a joke, yes. But the specialized position outside of vaccines, oncology, and psychological drugs (these are products that are BS, and do more harm than good) are highly advanced selling positions.

A mere myth. SOS...see no one but non-medical,office staff, lunch catering.... maybe.
Highly advanced? Bullshit. How do I know? I’m a “ highly advanced” sales person.
It’s the same boring, soul- sucking, go thru the motions, highly paid part-time job that is PC.

I was a rep and then a manager years ago I was sure the job would go away because it was not a legitimate way to sell a MEDICINE. SO I WENT TO SCHOOL AT NIGHT COURTESY OF MERCK AND RECEIVED AN MBA AND LAW DEGREE. I HAD A LIMITED BUT SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE.
I RETIRED YOUNG.
THATS WHAT I DID. HO

10 to 2...catered lunch with $50 gift certificate kickback or a couple cases of beer from caterer. Life’s good. I plan to ride this gravy train all the way. Oh yes...and I never “work’’ on Friday....usually too hungover...
