Since both surgical and Pharma(ISTA) are in the same place it would make sense to make Irvine the Home Base for Pharma. Much easier to manage.

Pharma facilities are all over the map in the US. NJ, Florida, Rochester, Irvine. The amount of money saved by consolidating to one of these locations would be (HUGE).

Four facilities in the US? What do they do at each facility that they need four separate locations for Pharma?

ISTA is a full service Pharma company although manufacturing is in Tampa

NJ is Regulatory, Clinical research, project management

Tampa is manufacturing

Rochester is Preclinical, some clinical research, a little regulatory.

Having a presence on the east and west coast is important for the Pharma Business. So probably no real duplication between ISTA and NJ. The manufacturing site in Tampa is state of the art and does not need to be moved.

The big question is why keep Pharma in Rochester? Seems like an unnecessary duplication as all of Rochester's Pharma could be moved to either NJ or Irvine (ISTA).

Wrong. A lot of the people working in Pharma still work in Rochester. B+L Pharma US is now in four separate locations- Tampa, NJ, Rochester, and California. Some companies have separate facilities in different geographic locations but usually the separate facilities are distinct separate divisions within the company.

In the case of B+L Pharma the division is Pharma US and it is splintered into four separate locations. It would be of course hard to sell a company that has this current structure. A really bold move would be to move all of Pharma to Tampa where they make the stuff. A less bold move would be to move the Pharma out of Rochester to either NJ or California and center R+D at one of these locations. Have a presence on the east and west coast and a manufacturing site in Florida can be justified for a company. Pharma Rochester does not seem to have an advantage and most of the Pharma people in Rochester will likely be moved to either the California or NJ location.

I for one would love to go to Tampa or Irvine. Rochester is a dump! This place is cold dirty and not attractive to future employee candidates. A move to a pleasant place would make B&L a quality place to work!
