Peter Principle Alive and Well at GNE

What is it with this company that keeps promoting people so fast up to their levels of incompetence (i.e. the Peter Principle)? So many people in Commercial getting to very senior positions without having had one thread of experience in the area they are managing.

I know we are desperate to have women in leadership positions (and I am one, so no issue there), but this is ridiculous. Look round and see all these VPs, Senior Directors and Directors running things that they have never touched. What happened to experience and expertise as a job requirement? I have been interviewer for several positions and have seen great external candidates, but they were not considered because of the culture thing, which is such a bogus excuse.

Been here over 10 years and we now desperately need new blood with experience as opposed to the same names getting recirculated all over.

This is what happens when the pipeline looks so good and you can price your therapies at a premium. The culture will change and it has to, way too may people as you point out are not competent- this will not be tolerated as the company will have to continue to be profitable in the face of new challenges. There are few true leaders here, and the ones they call great are poor excuses for business savvy people
The culture is a mirage anyway, everyone acts like everything is great- while they stab you in the back

Good pipeline? Really? Remember the days when we used to get new shirts marking the launch of new molecules every 4 to 6 months? Gee when was last time new molecule was launched?

Well did you know that NO molecule was LIPed in 2015? And out of 5 LIPed molecule - 4 came from outside despite gRed/pRed spend of $1 bil per year.

Folks - good ol days are long gone as seen by lot of gRed leadership departures.

As for women in mgmnt - insult to white men. Ironically ROaCHes in Basel don't demand such policy - go figure. I've seen so many women promoted to positions definitely over their head that it's not even funny anymore. In the mean time certain depts in GNE are either ALL women, Chinese or Indian. Lesbians rule HR. GNE is changing for worse and I bet white men will be RIF'ed by trumped by women and minority mafias when RIF arrives in the middle of the earth SSF.

The reason you don't see the Roaches promoting women into management in Switzerland is because everything there is based on the rank you achieved in the Swiss Army. Hell they didn't even let women vote in Switzerland until 1971.

Whilst these facts may prove to be true, it is more a case of being a meritocracy n Switzerland vs. political appointments in such as you have in the US, laden with women who are not quite up to the task

There are many men AND women not up to the task. Happens when you force quotas such as 90% of all managers and above staffed from inside. Result: Same old thinking, rising to a level of incompetence, no new ideas. Like professor tenures but with a lot more money.

100% True, I believe you do have a problem with MEN and WOMEN not up to the task across the pond, over here we feel much more competent. As well you have the internal hires and promotions that make absolutely no sense- many are political appointees as you and your government are apt to do

South San Francisco is taking a piss. Soon many will be gone and good riddance to the lot of you

This is so true./ Just inexperienced people bouncing around in the name of development. useless most.

Indeed as strength and weakness of GNE are "collaboration". The level of in-breeding by folks moving from 1 gig to another lacking the basic skills and experiences on the new position based on brown nosing and playing the politics have resulted in cesspool of talents. This is especially true of AD/D only in-bred from within and given to complete clueless idiots.

Alas when will Roche see thru (if not yet) the molasses of incompetence? Afterall Roche did bring the SMEs from GNE back in 2010 and most if not all were driven back to SSF or fired outright.

LMFAO- collaboration the buzzword of corporate culture these days- which really means no one wants nor can be held accountable- get a bunch of incompetent morons in a room, default the decision to some consultant or agency to do the work and then take the credit if it goes well, blame them if it does not!
BULLS*IT if I ever heard it- collaboration make me laugh
Mostly for women who never work hard at anything or ever show up.
Meanwhile those of us who are productive get ostracized
GNE sucks!

My FRM is a total waste of resources/$. When I follow up with a customer about the FRM whom they met with, they roll their eyes and say that they didn't get any value out of the meeting. My MSL isn't much better. Get rid of the FRM's and let us handle customer reimbursement issues, it would increase our value in the offices, we would be able to respond quicker and save the company $.
Then again, I have so many scenarios where I'm "working with a challenging colleague, how do I overcome this" I should be able to land any position I really want if I go for it......

Yep correctamundo especially on "those of us who are productive get ostracized" and add to it those of us who do our jobs instead of bringing contractors to do our job so we can brown nose and collaborate more on worthless BS fluff project for the next gig...

Yes the ones who bring the agencies and consultants in to do their jobs=get promoted.
Why? They can walk around stress free and be aligned with the BS culture- because they are not producing or doing anything- WOW talk about a sham- do no work, source it out at huge expense- get your ass promoted- Marketing and Training is full of these types

The irony here is that only a certain generation of "experienced' or 'older' people even know about the Peter Principle as it applies to corporate promotion of mid-level managers. But the idea that Genentech has become a poster child for this regression to the lowest level of competence as people get promoted upward has been going on for quite a few years. The triumph of style over content, especially in the autoimmune side of Genentech's drug development pipeline, is staggering. Take any Regeneron product in the same indication as a Genentech product and Regeneron's will be equal or far better - there are now studies to substantiate this with scientific rigor. But Regeneron does drug development with a fraction of the work force and with better attention to the important details. Which details to pay attention to comes from managerial and broad scientific experience, not youthful enthusiasm and over-constructed biomarkers from a department that cannot pay for itself.

Yep Eylea is eating Lucentis (and even very diluted Avastin) franchise since it is "better" drug - 1 needle stick to eyeball every 2 months vs. 1 month. Lucentis DP considering the price is packaged like Clinical product with 2 needles wrapped in rubber band. Lucentis implant project did Ph II FPI 4 years behind schedule late last year and Novartis chose not to partner with us after some due diligence. Lucentis let go bunch of reps before the annual NSM event in LV in Jan.

Roche GNE was too arrogant and not hungry enough to pursue aPCSK9 Ph III trials saying we're not going to play in the low margin high volume business. Well both Regeneron and Amgen got approvals for same molecule!

Take a look at gRed... No LIP in 2015 and 4 out of 5 lipped molecules came from outside - what a payback for sinking $1 bil per year on "research". The good ol days are long gone as when was last time we got shirt commemorating product launch compared to couple plus years ago?

In the mean time Peter Principle is alive and well as pointed by so many here.. I hope Roche will see thru GNE baloney after 6 years and come clean house in SSF...

So true, look the part, pontificate, use the word strategic and collaborative enough and all hot air, or as a friend used to say, all foam and no beer!
Sad but true, Genentech is not what it used to be

This is so spot on. I am a supplier into Commercial in Genentech and have been doing so for over 10 years. The revolving door and rising incompetence are shocking. I work with different companies and see better talent elsewhere. I attribute much of Genentech's success to the science and luck of hitting successful studies - and not at all at the prowess of their Commercial teams.
