Offer the Handraiser Option

GSK and every other company in the business has made this an option although not all handraisers were given their option. Make it a definite that all handraisers will be granted their option and the amount of pain from layoffs would be greatly eased for all others involved and the company can continue on its meadering way.

Agree, 1000%

Why keep people who want to go? Where will there motivation be if they are kept?

Keep employees who want to work, want to stay!

IBM tried this in the late '80s and discovered that the best employees are the ones most likely to raise their hand, because they have confidence in their abilities and real, meaningful, transferrable skills. Result: The dolts stayed and the company suffered.

What is so sad about this fact is that, were Merck to be run in a way that really empowered workers, the best employees would want to stay and the dolts could be let go. Unfortunately, it is the reverse.

Agree this would be wonderful! I would be the first to get out of the hell hole this company has become. However, management is probably scared since they might not have anyone left standing. I am looking now for a new opportunity and hope I am lucky enough to be let go.

Yeah, ideally those who raise their hand would get their wish, but I suppose from a company standpoint, they want to make that decision because many of the folks raising their hands are probably in a position to gain big fat severances; one that will carry them through long enough to find another job (which is about one year, in this economy; no joke!). So, very expensive to let all the hand-raisers go, who want to go. Much cheaper to let a lot of the newbies go, 'cause they won't cost so much. Then, the hand-raisers who get stuck having to stay around either have to work enough, or get fired (and thus, not as much cost to the co.)
Or, they just get bullied enough and quit on their own....no severance.
We are all just numbers plugged into equations. That's it.
Lots of considerations. And yes, there are probably SO many people raising hands, that they wouldn't have anyone left if everyone accommodated!
Bad part, you beg to be let go, but they keep you...mgt knows you don't want to be there, so you are being watched like a hawk. No win situation.

Need and want to stay people like me do not have the years to get a decent severance. Wont be more than one paycheck. Dread the thought of it happening especially now and only one paycheck household.

They want control over who stays, who gets laid off (retirement bridges and cheap reps) and who gets pressured to quit (40-something white reps with tenure...and high salaries). That's the hard truth, like it or not.
