Occupy Amgen

Someone else jokingly suggested this on another thread, but it is actually a good idea if enough employees (at least a couple hundred) participate. It's atrocious that KS was granted a $6 million raise earlier this year ($21 million annual salary) as a reward for all of his failures. As staff and shareholders, we need to communicate that this is not acceptable. A protest in front of B38 would be symbolically ideal, though a nearby public intersection would ensure media coverage and that it's not immediately disbanded by Security. We could all wear goggles and lab coats to attract media and minimize being singled out for retaliation.

There are times when it is necessary to fight against things that have become so wrong that they should no longer be. Things that were once small that have become big, but are no less wrong, must be made small again; a revolution, or a complete circle, is needed. Whether you want freedom from another country , or you want to overthrow an oppressive government, every fight is the same. A revolution (from the Latin revolutio, "a turnaround") is a significant change that usually occurs in a short period of time. Revolutions have happened throughout human history and vary widely in terms of methods, duration, motivating ideology, and the number of participating revolutionaries. Their results include major changes in culture, economy, and socio-political institutions.

Let's do it!

Date, time, place? Hours prior to the Q3 conf call, perhaps? RIFs will have probably been implemented by then, so there will be people with nothing to lose, and some dignity to gain. Others to show their support and solidarity, since there will likely be more in the future.

Name it, let's reach a consensus, and I'm there.

Signs we can carry:

Patients in Need, not Corporate Greed
Innovation Over Stagnation
Jobs are created with $1 CEO salary
More shares, not Sharers
Etc.

I have a better idea, how about you make enough money to buy enough shares and then vote him out, if that doesn't work how about instead of protesting all 15 of you quit at the same time.
Greed is Greed, you are in the same boat as the person you are complaining about - doing nothing and taking a salary

You couldn't be more wrong. Those of us angry enough to protest have worked tirelessly, day and night for Amgen. We have bled for Amgen. We have exceeded at our roles, sometimes with but often without receiving any sort of recognition or compensation. And that was fine, because we believed in the company.
We have witnessed what it once was, imagined where it could have gone, and are now appalled at the direction it is heading. We are protesting against the corruption of what was once an innovative company, and the injustice of our worthless leader(s) being grossly over-compensated for nothing but failures.

Nice Banana Republic Dictator thinking. Throw the Bastard out so I can be the next Bastard. Some people have more ethics than that.

I don't think that was what the poster was saying. How many people now at Amgen have watched as their fellow employees have been cast aside for the last 4 years? And now they are coming for the rest of them. Well, after the RIF everyone was happy to have their jobs and didn't realize they were putting their faith in some really despicable people.

If that's what they meant, it certainly wasn't articulated well. And it's still flawed.

First, most people weren't "happy" with their jobs and they didn't "put faith" in Management. That's evidenced by all the posts here and a fairly high attrition rate these past few years despite a bad economy. And there's another difference: the previous lay-offs didn't coincide with KS getting a 37% raise to a whopping $21 million/year.

Second, the poster accused us of "doing nothing and taking a salary". Most of us work damn hard just to make less than 0.5% of what our CEO gets paid for bringing the company down. That's outrageous.

Amgen's 2010 revenue rose 2.8 percent over the prior year and its net income changed little at $4.6 billion.

Chairman and CEO Kevin Sharer's compensation was up nearly 38 percent to $21.1 million.
Robert Bradway, former chief financial officer, up 51 percent to $7.8 million
Fabrizio Bonanni, executive vice president of Operations, up 66.8 percent to $8.2 million
George Morrow, executive vice president of Global Commercial Operations, up 14 percent to $6.5 million
Roger Perlmutter, executive vice president of Research and Development, up 18 percent to $6.3 million
Jonathan Peacock, executive vice president and chief financial officer, $10.95 million

Name the time and place. I will show up.

that's enough to fund at least 300 level 5-6 positions. Somethings wacky in corporate culture.

there is nothing wacky going on here...just a group of people milking a once great company for all it is worth. Since the board of directors is powerless (kevin cronies), there is no check to this type of behavior. The execs are funneling litterally billions off this thing while revenues and earnings stagnate. In their minds I am sure it is well justified...as are the jets and other perks. This behavior is really disgusting, but unfortunately completely to be expected from people with this moral set...

you will all be fired, and you are way to scared to do any such thing.

All talk, no action.... the reason things are such a mess in the country

People are starting to wake up, hope it is not too late.

If you do nothing you are saying that Kevin is worth 1000X more than you are, which makes you worthless.

Do they say that a lot at Amgen? Someone told me that when I was being considered for an RA job in Longmont.

I guess it was a warning because they fired me six weeks into my contract. No reason/discussion/warning. Just a phone call on the way home from work. All I can think of is that I inquired too much and showed an arrogant level of initiative (e-mailing directors with questions - gasp!).

I've since met two other folks from ACO who quit because they couldn't stand the culture. Too Navy, perhaps? Anyway, we all work under a meritocracy now, and I'm being recognized and promoted - which is just like it was before I stepped in ACO.
