Yes it was. I have a friend with a similar story although he wasn't a ward vet rather in a terrible motorcycle accident. Doctors wanted to amputate one leg - he wouldn't hear of them - instead bought a spa an worked out every day. At the one year mark, he made a doctor apt and rolled up to the front desk of his previous doctor's office. The doctor happened to find out he was there and came out to ask if he was ready to 'accept the surgery'. He got up out of the wheelchair and walked to the doctor and told him, "No thanks, I don't give in that easy." He was a security guard for Motley Crue and that ended his job but he started a very successful business and then started playing harmonica and is now doing well and playing in blues bands on a regular basis - although he does walk with a cane.
The moral: Never give up - there are no odds in it.
