Novartis

Eli Lilly could learn so much from Novartis. Like diversifying a little so that the employees are not discarded when the current obsession with blockbuster CNS drugs ends with the patents...

I work for Sanofi and let me tell you diversification will not save the pharmaceutical sales representative role in this industry. Our CEO Chris Viehbacher has been on the diversification kick ever since he took the helm of Sanofi, but that diversification is not going to lead to more opportunities for sales representatives in the future. When you're buying companies that have generic products or products that do not need sales representation how does that translate into employment for a sales rep? In addition, digital tools are fast replacing representatives for sampling products in the doctors' offices. Have you seen the new digital sampling tool from Epocrates? this profession is finished people, diversification will not save you.

Your an idiot- good sales people will always be needed. People always prefer to buy from people.

Agree with OP. I worked for Novartis. Yeah, they diversified and THEY, the company, will survive, not the reps. Hardly any new opportunities arose from their diversifications (eyecare, vaccines, generics, etc.). Never saw any postings in these areas. They put all of their eggs in one basket, antihypertensives, when it came to the reps....BIG mistake!

Yes, they especially want to buy the same product from 10 other reps three times a week. And they really like hearing about the 10th me too drug in each when there are efficacious less expensive generics available. You're right, rep jobs will last forever.

After working in the Industry for over 3 decades, the buch of us always wondered when the jig would be up. As we eventually retired, we were amazed that the business kept going and going like the energizer bunny. Regulations and the slow to develope pipeline coupled with managed care and the patent cliff has put the business in a steep decline that will not recover. There will always be some representation for Pharma but much less than we have now. I wish all the un-retired the best of luck.
