I am on this OTC contract job now and I have to say it is GREAT and lower stress than prescription product selling. Yes the base is lower but I am enjoying my job especially with everything going on right now in the industry/economy. Base is around 44,000 to 46,000 year and it is pretty set and not really negotiable. They are starting to ramp up samples now and I have not really had any access issues(depends on your territory too). You can get a storage unit for your samples and they will pay for. There is no budget except for $100 quarter to do Benefiber demos. As far as management goes it depends what manager you get. I have been happy with mine. Bonus you can expect to make is about 3,000 to 7,000 a year(you have to remember this is OTC products not prescription). One bonus is measured each quarter by reach and frequency of your targets compared to everyone else on your team. Another bonus is measured by market share change/physican surveys of your products in your region at the end of the year. NEW BONUS CHANGE STARTING SOON----------->**They will now be getting district level sales data in dollar sales by zip codes to measure growth in your territory. This along with your reach and frequency will be measured now to determine your bonus per quarter. Bonus amount potential will now go up with potential to make around $2500 a quarter.** Occasionally there is a coupon redemption bonus when they add Boost Nutrtional Drink/Powder to your portfolio at different times during the year. You get $40 for internet. There is no cell phone money and your cell number does not go on your business cards. You get a company car with covered maintenance and fuel card. New Ford Fusions are the company cars issued most recently with SUVs(cant remember which brand) for the snow belt areas.
There is an expansion of about 50-75 reps nationwide starting soon or just now starting. Territories were kind of big before but are now getting smaller with the expansion. Total targets you will have are about 150. Your products are Prevacid 24HR, Excedrin Migraine and Benefiber(and Boost Nutritional Drink/Powder at different quarters during the year) You will be calling mainly on primary care and Gastroenterologists- Other specialists are currently being added in now like Allergists, ENTs etc that use PPIs like Prevacid 24HR. Every call has to be signed on an IPaq regardless if samples left or not in order for it to count as a call. Call expectations are 9 calls a day.
There is no chasing scripts and looking at weekly data every week. This job is a good one if you are ok with the compensation. Work your territory efficiently(routing), do total office calls and close for recommendations and you will be fine. No complaints here.
You get a laptop computer for emails, expenses and admin stuff and you get an Ipaq hand held to record your calls/signatures that you sync to your laptop evry night.
I hope this gave you a good solid insight to the job!
