NJ closing?

Kenilworth is not closing. It's being retooled. Merck is investing $120 million to establish biologics R&D activities and will bring in about 350 employees wo do bioprocess and bioanalytcis research from other NJ sites. About 580 manufacturing jobs will be eliminated. Another 900 office positions will be moved to other locations in NJ, mostly to corporate offices in Whitehouse Station.

The Star Ledger has a big story about this.

Kenilworth is closing every building (k5,k6,k1,k2,k10,k11) on site except one R&D building (K15) by 2013. The size of the site will only be about 1/4 of what it is now.

I'm not being a "hater". I did say "2013" every building mentioned above will be closed. Thats just facts. They are adding on to one building (K15). Put a fence around K15 and you lose alot of space. It will be one building instead of a site by 2013.

So acording to you 1500 people remain:
Then if
580 people gone
900 people moving
That leaves 20 people
their bringing over 350

Doesn't look good but I guess it is still open.

The article states: "As the project unfolds over the next two years, the work force at the Kenilworth campus is expected to shrink from 2600 people to 1500.

So, let's do the math:

2600 minus the 900 positions moving to WS = 1700
1700 minus the 580 manufacturing positions lost = 1120
1120 plus the 350 postitions moving over from Summit, Union and Rayway = 1470
Round that up, and up you 1500.

Ok, in 1999 how many employees were on the Kenilworth site? My point is 1500 is nothing compaired to what the site can hold. There will be abandoned buildings everywhere (there already is), except for K15. So yes, Kenilworth site is "not closing", but it will be about 1/4 the size.

Merck's a ghost town elsewhere (Rahway, WS), so abandoned buildings in Kenilworth is not much of a stretch for what Merck is already used to. A terrible shame to see the downfall of Kenilworth. If only this merger was a bad dream, and Schering was still in existence. Schering was a great company to work for in pre-Hassan days. I'm thankful I am close to "early retirement age"...may be leaving even sooner than that, in the next round of layoffs, which will be fine as long as I get the Schering severance package. Wouldn't be surprised, though, if Merck waits to lay off legacy Schering reps after the Schering severance package expires...so that they can give us a cheaper severance. Pharma will never be the same...glad I got to ride it for 25 years, but won't miss it once I'm gone.

For all uses Kenilworth is used at this very moment, all of those job prospects will be gone, as well as those in Union. Merck is moving it's manufacturing and packaging jobs elsewhere. The Union closure was planned anyway, with many of the jobs going to be utilizing the half abandoned current Kenilworth site.

For the numbers; 900-1100 people who currently work in Union/Kenilworth will be GONE. They will not be going anywhere nor will they be rehired unless interviewed for another position (not likely). The numbers brought in for the biologics conversion... they're not entirely sure of. Merck apparently will help people will their resumes.

I'll keep an eye on this thread to answer any questions.

What buildings are the Union employees going to occupy? Will they be moved when K15 is complete?

Ah... corporate culture... people are afraid to have the balls to stand up and say what they believe!

I haven't stated any real additional information as to what was already stated in a public statement to the shareholders (which I am). Basically Merck has decided to consolidate their manufacturing operations in efforts to reduce the cost of business. It's a rather simple idea. This was pretty well known long before the actual announcement through communication meetings and such, but the true extent of it was never revealed (many people did presume, and most were correct). Sucks for those who are legacy Schering (which I also am), and a majority of us will be gone before Merck brings down the axe anyway.

Merck is a sinking ship, I'd advise those on board to find a spot in a life raft, and get out as soon as possible.

As for another above poster: I'm not sure on what they are doing exactly with K15. I just know it will be the center for their research at the new Kenilworth site, which will be focused on biologics and biosimilars.
