New to Operating Room/ Need tips

New OR Rep

Guest
Just recently switched to Medical Sales. Working on some orthoaedics accounts and soon I will be in the operating room assisting them using our bone substitute materials. I have a strong science background. But I have never been in OR before. I haven't inquired what documents they need before I get there. I learn that each hospital has their own requirements. Anyone knows what standard documents I should start working on.

I also see that Vendormate, RepMax etc have vendor credentialling. Do I have to sign up with them or wait?

I would also appreciate any helpful hints when I get to the OR for the first time.

Any tips to succeed as ISR Medical Rep/DSales Agent/Distributor also welcome.

Definitely get to your family physician and make sure all of your major vaccinations have been updated:

Here's a start:
Measles
Mumps
Rubella
Varicella
Hepatitis

You're also most likely going to need to complete a lot of online courses on bloodborne pathogens and OR protocol. Your company should have these for you to complete.

To prep, How to Get Into Medical Device Sales is a good book that I just bought on Amazon. It's kind of "rambly" at times, but goes in-depth on what to expect and how to prep.

Thanks. It helps.

I am an independent rep. I will have to get many those shots by myself. (Oh Boy! some shots are actually a course... meaning that I need to do a few over a period of time like Habatitis B... 6 months). I will start preparing. I already have blood borne pathogens certificate though.

Dear Newbie:

Don't put donuts on the back table that is sterile (believe it or not it's been done)
no seriously make friends with an OR Tech or Circ nurse and ask them to show you the ropes. Even better yet is a veteran OR rep but sometimes they can get a bit territorial.

Oh Vendormate, Reptrax and all that &%$% we all hate it..but sign up now the process never ends and can take months. Some individual hospitals require separate privledging as well.

Hang in there and remember you are in their house (meaning do not and I repeat piss off the nurses) be humble, don't be too bubbly until they know you and command presence in the OR
(otherwise the sharks will eat you alive) and by the way this is coming from a nurse who is a veteran Medical Device Sales Mgr. Don't ever get too comfortable either because you may find a dagger in your back.

So go get em and good luck!
