Where did this associate director fake news surface from? This title is common at other pharma companies, everyone knows it is a phony term for manager. If this were to happen, do you think Amgen is doing it for your benefit? Nooo way. They have been caught with their pants down dishing out director positions to unqualified people. The ultimate reason for ad's is to add another step to avoid placing one in an L7. Think beyond salary, going from gpip to gmip costs the company more money. They'll probably also mandate you are in an ad role for 18 months which further prevents you from moving up. This is a hoax, a bunch of malarkey.

Horizon has an associate director level. Might be more about positioning the structure in a way that doesn't downgrade titles post-merger.

I say bring on the Assoc Dir title. Amgen needs to emulate other companies and go role by role asking what do you do? They should not hesitate moving one down from Dir to AD based on function and competency. The scuttlebutt indicates this will finally happen soon, bring on the demotion calls. As for salaries within levels, they are all over the place, the job listing comp ranges are just that. I suppose this is good, I keep seeing rockstars leave while others push their work on others as they don't have skills. You need skills when dealing in pills (or mAbs).
 




They re swapping out the senior principal scientist title on the scientific career path for associate director. It was discussed at the R&D all staff and it is definitely appropriate.

Companies like Merck do this. They also highlight equivalence in scientific and business roles. e.g., Merck Principal Scientist is equivalent to a Director on the business track. Its good because it highlights scientific contribution and the fact that scientists have to jump through more more hoops and typically have much more experience and responsibility (vs. business colleagues) by the time they hit Director.
