New Commercial Model

You know the other day I was looking for the NCM...I can't find it anywhere. I swear I just left it near my computer. Anyone seen it? I sure miss it. By the way I may go postal at 1S can't handle it anymore.

The managers must have attended a meeting where they were ordered to check and make sure all the reps bought into and memorize the concept of NCM. A few years back they must have attended a meeting when they returned and put everyone on PIPs or their own jobs would be jeopardized.

My God this company is overrun with middle management. They are tripping over themselves to feel useful. What a joke. Most in sales could do our jobs with half of the people hovering over us. How many people do we really need between the CTMs, the RDs, the national account execs, the M&Ms (LOL), the execs, the leads, the account managers? My head is spinning from wondering how any company even thinks this is a good idea. Fire them and let your good salespeople sell, for crying aloud! I am going to explode. Oh, I was told I better know that stupid model as well. I could honestly give a crap. I am done.

Time for me to move on. I've been doin' this too long.

I mean, when was the last time I actually sold something? What's funny is I can't tell ya. We go out and make our calls, begging for a doc to prescribe our product. He shruggs us off because there's no commitment from him. I mean when was the last time I actually collected a Purchase Order for product? When was the last time a hospital or Nusring Home, etc. gave me a check for my product?

My friend sells IT, and the gratification he feels is immediate. He knows spot on who is fuckin' with him and who is serious. He gets paid when he collects a PO.

We get paid if we increase share. What the fuck is share?????????????

Dude, I'm so with you. Why does Mother even need us? I feel like a freekin' robot. I do the same thing 5 days a week -- and I make decent money to do it. I'm starting to face reality that reps will soon be a thing of the past.

I don't feel like I'm safe anymore. Feel like if I fart at a meeting, I'll be dumped.

The rep's job has been pretty much a joke for a long time. Lots of make believe action and blowing smoke up someone's ass to keep management happy or at least at bay and off your own ass. So we go through the motions, try to keep busy with some actions/goals that can be effectively bs'd, and Merck deposits a check in our bank accounts. How much longer can this facade last? I don't have a clue. I thought reps would be history years ago. When our jobs can no longer support the level of management and support staff that Merck carries, then we will be history. That's why it really doesn't make any difference if our job is mostly a joke or actually contributes to Merck's profitability, it's all about our jobs supporting the slobs in management and UG/WP/WH. One of these days I'm going to apply for one of those solar energy support jobs at UG.

I miss those days when I personally called in the orders for vaccines for physicians. Or phone in orders for pharmacies. Or won a formulary battle and saw the increased sales. Now we need a "Merck Specialist" to deal with managed care and key decision makers. It was so gratifying to formulate a plan, execute it, and won the battle without every auxiliary people jumping in and interfering. How many Merck people do you need to fix a light bulb?

Ah yes, those were the days. Give me the old district's Pneumovax or Fluax pre-order contests. Now those were fun. Or ordering Mefoxin/Primaxin or Heptavax/Recombivax for your large hospitals and medical centers. Yeah, I'm livin in my dreams from the past. Those were indeed the good old days. Of course back then, we didn't have more than 1 or later 2 reps in a territory and none of the specialty/support/consultant Bullshit. Can't escape from my current nightmare soon enough.

They have been trying to make the job of sales rep obsolete for awhile. But they also know getting rid of all direct face-to-face sales is not a smart move. So they keep coming up with all kind of strategies to replace a real sales rep and screwing everything up along the way.

I saw one of my Mother counterparts yesterday, whom I can't stand. He's a Bible Thumping Christian Conservative who "believes in freemarket capitalism." I hear it from him all the time. Now I'm fiscally conservative, but does he realize that although he is a capitalist and believes in freemarkets, he works in a truly Socialistic Role -- Calling himself a 'sales rep', yet never once collecting a check or better yet closing a deal or obtaining a Purchase Order for product. A Pharmaceutical Sales Representative is a true Socialist at heart. We "market" our drugs, but do we ever sell them? And to do it we all sort of get paid the same. What a hypocrit. Time for all of us to go.

1. Pharma reps are more like lobbyist. They influence not direct sell. It still takes work to make that happen.
2. Studies show that drugs perform better with representation. I had recently interviewed with a company that tried to use medical meetings/conventions and the internet combined with with an inside force to sell their product. It didn't work. They added reps and increased their sales dramatically.
3. This is still worthwhile work. Pharma will eventually "right size" itself and some companies will flourish.

Hang in there. It is not over but the change will hurt.

What is the P-value of that study?

Let's see at Merck if we can prove this study wrong. Let's fire all the reps and see what happens. We could always hire back new ones ath half the price, let them drive their own cars around.
