............... it is insane. How does management expect us to keep focused on our jobs when many will be gone so soon??? There are so few jobs out there so most of us will be on long term unemployment. This is truly a sad situation for all of us!!

My advice,

Dont focus on your job and start focusing on yourself. I had freinds last year that were laid-off and many are still looking. Other industries like banking are laying of 10s of thousands along with many other companies in our industry. Some of these friends have stopped looking and are switching careers, going back to school or just waiting it out. I was told the severance was ok but will never sustain you for more than a year after unemployment depending on your financial situation. Besides, Novartis is not giving you a severance because they care about you. Its all about them and playing it safe for legal reasons. The economy is predictied to get worse so maybe people need to focus on careers that will be in demand in the future which will probably require more education. Many of my friends and myself have been researching and found that the careers of the future are gong to be in nursing, physical therapy, computer science, MIS, engineering, transpotation, and the food Indusry(Hershey Foods & MM Mars). Many selling jobs out there but they are not secure and very unstable. It will be a hard decision.

Good luck with your decision.

Novartis is the king at multiple management layers and departments....many whom are constantly "justifying" their existance. This means there is dead weight there. Seriously, do we really need more than 3 or 4 layers between Dan the Man V. and the field rep? Do we need more than 5 divisions? Other companies do quite well with a lean top structure. NVS could too. Unfortunately, too many love the "power" their meager "upper level" control gives them.

Most CEO's now take cuts to help sustain....Dan got his $$$Millions in bonus for 2011.
