Duvalier's return to Haiti should strike fear in the hearts of those already living in abject dispair after the earthquake. Instead, on this evening's news, there were interviews with a number of younger Haitians and the vast majority are very excited about the change Duvalier can have rebuilding their nation and few seem to remember who and what he is.

Cantave said she remembered life under Duvalier, how her parents impressed on her even as a young girl that she must never speak against him because his government tolerated no dissent. "It was a question of life or death," she said.
Cantave added that the younger generation does not remember his regime. "All they know is hearing that Haiti at that time was beautiful, Haiti at that time was better, without talking about what really happened - the fear, the dictatorship," she said. "Yes there was good life in the country, but who had that good life? A very, very small percent. And with the dictatorship at that time, nobody could complain."
Cantave said people in Haiti are so desperate, though, that they are open to anyone who might offer them an alternative to the present chaos. "The people of Haiti are tired of suffering. They are tired of not being able to eat," she said. "They will take any chance, even without thinking it through."
