Moral Leadership
Leadership, as Dwight Eisenhower defined it, is’’ the art of getting someone else to something that you want done because he wants to do it. “Lead Yourself First: Inspiring Leadership Through Solitude’’ (2017, March 6). This quote describes how I feel about leadership at times, However I do believe that maybe, I was just in the presence of people that were horrible leaders. Leadership is not about using a person in a negative way, it’s about recognizing, connecting and communicating with each person you are responsible for. Forty-six percent of employees rarely or never leave a meeting knowing what they’re supposed to do next Mayfield, M., & Mayfield, J. (2017). Being a victorious leader is not an easy task, those who are able to lead successfully are born with certain qualities or they have worked genuinely hard on themselves to acquire the skills to lead others. To me an authentic leader is considered a perfect person, they are able to be openminded, motivated, passionate, confident, honest and humble. Be that as it may we know that no one is perfect, and no one has all of these qualities. However, an authentic leader or a great leader does possess a combination of these qualities. One experience that shaped my idea of what leadership is from a job I had at a grocery store. My manager was very rude and demanding she used her power to make other fear her, which led to other employees quitting their job. I stayed away from her and refused to interact with her outside of the job. She lacked empathy and was out of balance with herself. She only though about herself and used others to make her jobs easier. One exercise that I believe all leaders can benefit from is learning to be a Moral Leader, moral leadership starts when an individual takes a moral stance on an issue, convince others to do the same, and together spur change in a moral system, abounds in practice Cornelissen, J. P. (2020). Martin Luther King Jr used this method to help start the civil rights movement, the same way Colin Kaepernick became an American civil rights activist when he decided to kneel during the national anthem at the start of NFL games in protest of police brutality and racial inequality in the United States. They used their moral leadership skills to bring awareness to the issues that people around the world were experiencing. Both men believed in something, while sacrificing everything. There actions caused a big change in the world and will go down in history. I understand that every leader is not trying to change the world, or be in the public eye. However, I do believe that if a leader speaks up for their employees they can make a positive change in their company for the better. A moral leader is focused on providing values or meaning for people to live by, inspiration to act and motivation to hold oneself accountable Rudman, S. (2019).When are leaders are better people they are able to guide, change, motivate and inspire others around them to be the same.
