Mike Rice's ire

Seriously, anybody here over 35 that played ball. Wasn't this the norm until recently? Is anyone scarred by this?

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- In several dozen hours of video of Rutgers men's basketball practices obtained by "Outside the Lines," coach Mike Rice is seen hurling basketballs from close range at his players' heads, legs and feet; shoving and grabbing his players; feigning punching them; kicking them; and screaming obscenities and homophobic slurs.

WJOX FM here in Bham was talking about this today. They posed this topic and asked guys to call in about their experiences with coaches. One guy called in and talked about how his Coach regularly spit dip in his face at practice. I had this happen one time and don't have any psychological scars. The everyone gets a trophy generation have no idea of what it is was like. It's called character building and the coach is only trying to make the environment they are practicing in tougher than the game they are going to play.

Over 35 here and played a lot of ball - What Mike Rice did wasn't the norm, old school coaching, character building or toughening up the players. He went way over the line more than once and he deserved to get fired. Rice was flat out an abusive coach.

I could tell you stories that would make Rice look like a Sunday School teacher. I knew every cussword, slander, slur, in the world by the time I was eight. Then some small additions every year after that.

Ditto's . . . That was then, this is now.

I miss the good ol' days.....

I miss certain things about them also, but nobody is going to miss a coach like Mike Rice. How did his 'method' work for the team? From the results, not all that good. If any coach treated my son in that way, he would have a hell of lot more to deal with than getting fired.
