Merlin remote connectivity

There's apparently wifi adapters being prepared. Official support aside, anyone know if there is anything keeping a user from plugging a carefully selected non-SJM or generic 801.11b/g/n or USB 3G device into the home monitor today and successfully interrogating? Can it be done?

Im sure it could connect thru a wireless router, but obviously not thru a prepaid cellular basis.

most older people have t-lines and the ones who dont cant afford them... so they are certainly not going to have wireless internet or be able to afford another prepaid cell phone bill each month

The embedded system SJM use for Merlin@Home would have to have the correct drivers built into the kernel and one of the first features I would guess they undertake for security purposes is to remove everything except the bare minimum needed.

Unless you were able to break into the system or they added the ability to allow this as a feature, I can't see this being a possibility.

US PDF has the stuff about the wifi adapters removed.

Tho doesn't seem missing from US FDA approval docs circa 2011: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/cdrh_docs/pdf/P910023S257M.pdf

"Additionally, a new wireless kit is being provided in version 5.0 for Merlin@home patients to use with their broadband internet connection instead of a landline or cell phone connection. This new wireless kit includes a USB wireless adapter and cable, wireless access point and Ethernet cable attached to the wireless access point as well as a wireless access point power supply."

Certainly only the pay-SJM-every-month cell service is acknowledged about anywhere else though. I dunno.

Absolute nightmare for the clinics and the Merlin Support Team. Patients are going to be calling both of these folks trying to figure out what a USB Wireless Adapter is. The patients that don't will simply give up in disgust thus making the notion of a home monitored system pointless.

I think the future roadmap plans for the nextgen Merlin@Home have them looking at both options, due to costs and issues associated with MIFI. If I was a betting on this, I would wager that their software builds for each region will probably support an SJM MIFI vendor card and an SJM authorized external USB card. I would think you could order a unit that came with one or the other or both at an extra rate.
