Expect the unexpected? We have heard this before. Consolidation of Pharma under one roof seems more likely. Running a four facility operation New Jersey, Rochester, Tampa, Irvine Pharma group is incredibly inefficient. Think of the money savings of a one roof operation.
Because B+L does not do any real research any more (everything is outsourced) there is no real need to keep all four operations going. Tampa is the only facility that does any real work (not outsourced). The manufacturing could be outsourced as well but the time of transfer of all of the work to another facility would be too much.
Everyone (New Jersey, Rochester and Irvine) should be moved to Tampa. Then the manpower of the entire operation can be used to make Tampa a first class manufacturing facility and development organization. New Jersey and Irvine should close. Rochester should be made a Vision Care only operation so it can be sold as a separate unit to a Vision Care company.
Bold move. Yes. But this company needs some real shaking up to get a company like Merck to be interested in buying this company.
