Merck vs Vertex: NCM Reality Check

I hope everyone realizes that the battle shaping up in the HCV market could not be a better testing ground to illustrate either the success of the NCM, or abject failure of the NCM. It has been quite some time that two companies with very similar agents, with strong medical need were FDA approved into the market within ten days of each other.

This competition will be very telling....David vs Goliath, Big/Slow Pharma vs Lean/Fluid bio tech, I do not need to go on...you get the picture. Will Merck demo launch excellence like the company mandated 2-3 years ago ? Did we place people in positions based on operational and/or market expertise ? Did VPs hire the usual entitled crowd ? Will senior leadership be decapitated if we fail ?

Can't wait to sit back and watch this one....

Have to say, good points all

It really is going to be a good test of top management. The CEO of Vertex happens to be Mat Emmens who use to be with Merck. He knows just how Merck sells and he happened to be one of the smartest people Merck had working for them. By the way, Mat has also been CEO of at least 3 other companies prior to Vertex because he was so successful with the other companies. I, knowing Mat, know he is itching for a chance to go head to head with Merck. Good luck guys!!!!! I know it will be fun launching this product.

Matt was one of the last in management at Merck that I admired. He had his faults as we all do, but he was a smart guy and treated his people in a way that made us want to do our best for him. That is absent at Merck now. I hope he wipes the floor with you guys.

That is what's missing at Merck now after years of abusing and treating both internal customers as well as external ones shamefully. Nobody loves Merck anymore which is understandable but quite sad. When I was hired in the 80's there was a palpable love of this company by most employees. Our customers obviously loved us as representatives of Merck, too. In many ways we were a big happy family who wanted to do their best. Now we all are in survival mode and despite disliking or hating Merck and our jobs, we do want the company to survive just so we get paid. But that is the only reason which is kind of pathetic.

Spot on written above. Like any responsible adult...What do we do now ?

Start small...If Vertex crushes Merck....Get rid of the chain of command that enabled the defeat.

and Why not ? Put your money where your mouth is...Launch excellence...If not...Demand accountability. Fire the band 2-3s behind the launch. and Why not ?

Launch excellence was mandated 2-3 years ago? Wow - I would hate to see if the mandate was to make all launches suck 2-3 years ago. Saphris, Dulera... You could argue it was because these were brought in from legacy SP and it was hard to launch during an integration - but it still doesn't change the fact that perhaps NCM might be right for mature brands like Singulair but not be right for the launch of a brand that just needs constant promotion.

Per comment from dumb ass above....It will be the disparity in market share that tells the tale.

50-50...Merck wins big, 60-4...Merck wins, 70-30...Tough call, 80-20 Merck is embarassed...

Band 2-3s heads should roll if share is less than 30...

Dumb Ass here. My response to this genius: As I stated... NCM or no NCM, Merck is going to lose. If they get anywhere near 50% market share with that inferior product, then we'll know they bought the business through typically-underhanded and usually-illegal Merck means. It's the only way that P.O.S. company can compete. Desperation is the word of the day at Merck.

I can't wait til we win this HCV thing and crush Vertex and all you haters can shut up. Buy the business? Vertex is buying a heck of a lot more docs than we are. We can't do crap. They are the ones breaking all the rules. Still with that we will beat them. Now, go spew your venom. I love to watch it.

Rah, Rah, Rah! Merck SVR = 66%, Vertex SVR = 80%. OOps!

Will someone please tell me what at NCM is. Former SP here and that shit kills me, don't assume that everybody knows the code here. And by the way, I can sell, and will sell. Vertex will not beat me. Oh, and I love how you quote 66% and then quote 80%. Its 79% in the PI, but I want to see the study. Is it published? But seriously, what the hell is a NCM?

The "New Commercial Model", which was really just a big fat way to reorganize ("optimize"), lay off thousands, force hundreds more to quit under pressure and help it all get hid in the confusion of said reorganization. In other words, it was just Merck being the God awful company that Merck is.

Oh, and stop drinking the Kool Aid. Merck sucks, just like bocep. Vertex is going to spank you and every other Merck rep. They have a better drug. Accept it. Merck will try to sell bocep, fail miserably, and in 18 months you'll be joining all of those Merckies who will be laid off at the end of 2011.

So, I wonder if you still believe we will beat them:

Say "bye-bye" to our jobs and hello to another round of layoffs.
