Merck to cut 13,000 jobs

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111904800304576475752260745450.html

There is no mention of sales cuts as of now.

"The cuts will come in administrative and headquarters jobs, consolidation of office facilities, and the ongoing sale or closure of manufacturing plants, including in the company's animal-health unit."

Keep your head in the sand. Everyone else, look around you. They are doing exactly what was done before each and every layoff for the field.....keeping open positions open (including managers now) and not filling them...even with Inventiv reps. This is so they will have fewer people to layoff. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!

I am sure that if XR doesn't do as well as projected...(if it even comes out) and once Singulair goes generic that will be a different story. Nobody's head is in the sand. Every Merck rep I know, including myself, is aware of sales layoffs being a "when not if situation". The facts are that profits nearly tripled for 2cd quarter so I can't see sales layoffs happening until atleast the end of the year. KF's email and the article stated it was non-revenue generating positions for now.

Even though I hate the situation, I have a job now so as long as I am getting paid, I will work.

This reinforces the Corporate's view of how naive and poor business acumen is in Sales. Companies prefer not to announce sales force cuts to Wall Street because that does not push stock prices up like announcement of administrative staff. Do you believe everything you read in corporate announcements?

Good point. Why announce sales layoffs when you know they are going to stop working? Make them feel safe, then let the AX fall. Been through it too many times already. Save me the BS

Timney's email said predominately from non-revenue generating positions. "Predominantly" does not mean 100%.

Any news on the XR manufacturing issues behind the CRL issued by the FDA?

I love the part about the layoffs would be offset by new hiring in emerging markets. Corporate speak for cuts in the US and hiring in China and India.

Here’s an interesting read about how the US compares to the rest of the world when it comes to laying people off. No need to say that only here is it profits before people.

And that is how it should be. I want my portfolio of stocks to grow. This is no different than what Christie, Walker and Ryan are doing to the public service employees-I want my taxes lower-cut out the workers.

Besides, we have a great new Hep C drug and all you whiner sales people can only garner 20% of the market?! Clearly, we need to start with the cuts in sales and marketing.

"And that is how it should be." That is right...and that's why your job will be be cut very soon too.

Repeat Christie (the obese guy), Walker, and Ryan ad nauseam.

Exactly how much of your portfolio is invested in Merck? Do you have 10,000 shares? I think that should be the minimal to come up here and brag about, "I want my portfolio to grow and Christie, Walker, and Ryan..."

No kidding. Whoever said they will work as hard as they can must be naive. Guess what "THE COMPANY DOES NOT GIVE A C - - -P", so keep your shades on, it might become less painful for you.

What makes me sick is it isn't even about the shareholders; it's about top management making themselves rich at the expense of the employees. Or should I say former employees.

Good article. Everyone complaining about the gov't not making job or that corporate tax cuts will create jobs should read this article.

Why wait to leave? Next, Merck will announce a severence restructering. Probably 3 days of pay for every one year of service. Then, they will announce that layoffs will be based on territory size and volume and past 3 yr performance. But in the mean time, stay focused and create the need and sell the features and benefits of your products.

If you are a Merck employee, your days are numbered.

This will happen every year until Merck is sold to JnJ or Pfizer.
