The Kenilworth work (exception of the remaining building) is likely to get managed from West Point. However, a lot of the traditional work for Kenilworth will be a strong candidate for outsourcing to contract manufacturers that can also do some process development. These sorts of firms in India and China, especially the development side of them, are desperate for work. Late-stage development including clinical supply and manufacturing-scale process development is likely to go outside. The future manufacturing of those candidates will never stay in. The New Model.

fuck the new model

Unlikely. But for sure it will be fucking you if you work at MRL in the US. R&D budget will appear to be held constant (to keep Frazier looking like an honorable chap) into 2012 but there are more ways to spend R&D money across the planet than by merely providing MRL wages in the US.

Sadly true...Frazier NEVER said WHERE the R&D $$$ would be spent...

Will what's left of Kenilworth be merged with West Point or Boston?

No, K-15 will remain and active Merck facility. The rest of the site is probably up for lease once the rest of the buildings are totally vacated, should be interesting. When I visit that site it is hard to beleive that was the corporate head quarters of a multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical company, and Merck came in and just destroyed it, sad.

So K-15 will be all that is left. The biologics addition will probably be finished some time in 2012 and then what is left of Union will move into that location along with an existing block in K-15. What is going to be in K-15, do not know, the entire company is in limbo on what it is going to do beside chop off heads.

If I had to guess? Respiratory, biologics, chemistry, & one more therapy area. Chemistry already has 1/2 the building so I can't see them going anywhere. Respiratory has a strong presense there, they have millions invested in inhalation so that is not going anywhere. If I was a member of respiratory in Boston I would be concerned about an upcoming relocation to Kenilworth because they do not have the capabilities that Kenilworth does.

Bottom line, all speculation just like everything else.

K-15 will be biologic only. The only reason it is being built is because of the tax break the state has given Merck. Part of that agreement is dependent on how many new hires they put in that building. That is why you must reapply to get a job there. If they transfer you it does not count as a new hire. There is a lot of deals done behind closed doors that you have no clue about. Millions of dollars does seem like a large amount of money but at the end of the day its a drop in the bucket for Merck. They will not lease the buildings, they will sell them outright to someone. Merck is not in the real estate business. It's a shame what they have done. They have no intentions on keeping any SP employees. That should be pretty obvious by now.

As a mostly-disinterested observer (stay or go the money's about the same), I believe that Merck has spent an inordinate amount of time going slow on the merger. The headcount reduction so far seems nowhere near the ultimate reduction they hope for. For what it's worth, it seems that they are eliminating more S-P heads than Merck heads. From some of my colleagues - Merck and S-P - I gather that the rationale given for going slowly is that they do not want to harm the valuable parts of the business by going too swiftly. After seeing the Merck talent that is overwhelmingly in line to manage the S-P side of the business, I am fairly surprised at their level of capability. It seems to be average at best and certainly not better than the S-P talent they have moved aside. Merck is obviously taking this opportunity to make space for their rising stars. Unfortunately those rising stars seem more interested in rising than in starring. Based on the results so far, a good case for the slow consolidation is that most of those that have been selected to manage the consolidated company are clueless about how to do it. Seeing their decisiveness and vision in action convinces me that their lack of talent more than lack of opportunity was their issue at the Old Merck. Strangely, some of the most capable Merck personnel seem to have have their careers put out to pasture by the same management that is picking the future leadership. The merger is going slowly because the decision-makers and the strategy-setters and the strategy-implementors aren't very good at it. The pace will pick up because the beancounters will demand it but don't expect any sudden brilliance from those selected stars. Merck will hemorrhage money for years from this botched decision and the ineptness of the screwy people in charge of the merger.

Oh I am legacy Schering and I have no doubts that Merck purchased us for TRA and the rest of the pipeline. Once Merck came in and got rid all all the brains that made Schering a good company I knew right there and then that the clock was ticking on us Schering folks.

Schering people will never be in lock step with Merck so they have to get rid of the majority of us. The hatchet will fall any day now, I feel bad for both Schering & Merck employees, it is not going to be pleasant for anyone other than the top executives as they smile when the board gives them another milti million dollar bonus.
