Merck Layoffs

Is it true that Merck intends to lay off hundreds of reps by this summer?
I recently had a phone interview with Merck and have an interview next week. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Very few people are being hired from outside the company. We have many displaced reps looking for spots and they are supposed to get 1st preference. Also, word is that there will be more layoffs although we call it reorganization, optimization and displacement.

why move a displaced rep when you can hire a newbee at half price? do the math and learn the history. take the blinders off.

Takes to much time to train a newbee. An experienced rep can hit the ground running and make a quick difference. A newbee is spending the entire day looking at a map and trying not to get lost!

And just what is the "experience" that an "experienced rep" has that is so valuable? Come on, we're talking about trained monkey business. The only real experience is knowing where the offices are located and when old doc can be seen. It doesn't take that long to acquire that "experience" so a cheap newbee might be well worth the "investment" in the long run.

Take it from someone who has been laid off and closed-out of the company. They are looking for newbees for 1/3 of the salary a tried and true High Performer makes. Dont bother getting into big pharma if you can still save yourself from drinking the koolaid.

there will be a hiring freeze very soon.

some bad news to come.

do you think we will make earnings? if not, how much do you think we will fall short?

why do you think we had the RFM budget lecture over the past few weeks?

things are going to be tight for a while.

Remember, part of the reason is that Merck carried a whole Vioxx sales force for a long time post pulling it off the market.

you are way off - the reason things are going to be tight is because sales of vytorin and zetia are way off - so kiss the good times goodbye and look our for major cost cutting

They are picking off the tenured people regardless of numbers to lower costs. I'm willing to bet there will be at least a 10% salesforce reduction when the NCM goes live at the end of the year. I was just given my walking papers today, and the reasoning they used was that I violated region policy & standards because I wasn't on territory 200 days in the last 12 months. (FYI it was 198 and I get 5 weeks vacay + flex days) Bunch of crap. Even the people that are being displaced are being written up first so they don't have to pay full separation pay. If I were all of you, I'd keep my eyes wide open and don't trust your manager as far as you can throw them.

Lets all do some math. 52 weeks X 5 = 260 days
vacation 5X5=25, flex days = 5, 25+5 = 30
days possible in field = 230

Where are the other 32 days ? I don't know if they count meetings maybe 10 more days, even though that is work

leaves at least 22-32 sick days, without a major illness , how ???

You forgot holidays, personal days, weather days, sick days, and those meeting/training/exhibit days can also add up quickly. I believe the numbers could add up!

If I may ask, how did they do it? Did your immediate manager deliver the news, or did his boss work with you? My spouse works with Merck and I fear it's about to happen to us.

I second this but all they did is drone on and on at the meeting about how they are going to invest in people and keep the tenured reps...I CALL BULLSHIT!
