Merck going into generics?

Merck, down to their last fiber of being, believes that it can be the best at anything it sets out to succeed at. Unfortunately, their self-view and reality are far apart in the area of generics. Generics are all about price and Merck is an incredibly inefficient company with bloated overhead, wasteful spending, and cumbersome processes. Many former Merck employees have had the shock of their lives when they went into the generic business. It's hard work and you cannot make too many mistakes before the profit margin disappears. Even if they outsource everything related to making generics, the gross margins will be insufficient to keep that bag of hot air, Whitehouse Station, afloat. Merck will wander about for some time and then some day some truly competetive, skinflint company will reverse merge with Merck in order to keep the Merck name while actually being as generic as the worst of them. But when that happens Whitehouse Station will need to be just a memory of country club living in rural New Jersey.

In today's paper it reads "the average amount of property taxes paid by middle-class New Jerseyans is anywhere between $7500-$10,000 annually", and that this is considered to be the highest in the country.

That'a is a mean.....NJ/NY suburbs average 400-500K 2Bedroom little middle class house is 12-35K property tax. Dont know anyone who gets off at low 7.5-10K, 3 bedrooms 600-800K tax bills over 25K. High exiti rate...not an area to think about buying. Big chunk with mortgage and heating.

It's called supply and demand (the latter because of jobs) - that said, I have some concerns about demand in the long term (too expensive and too many jobs being lost, including and especially in Large Pharma)....

This is all dependent on what part of NJ you live in. Generally, northern NJ is more expensive than central, and central is more expensive than southern...more importantly, it varies town by town, and how much industry exists in any given town. When they came up with the 7.5 - 10K range, they averaged the entire state. Note: there are plenty of homes priced well under 400K throughout the state.

Agree, too expensive. NYC in city boroughs have low tax from industry but outside areas housing and taxes untouchable.

You are an idiot. I'm in Somerset County 2/ over an acre of property and a $450,000 home and pay $7400.

My previous house was a bit smaller and was $5600.

People with 25k/year taxes have a million dollar home.

Somerset is not near NYC suburbs, so lower taxes and cheaper living. Look around, Bergen Co, NJ and in NY, Nassau, Westchester and Rockland Counties. Dumpy neigborhood small homes that need much repair are 375-450K and 10-15K taxes (lousy schools), one step up
better schools middle class starts houses higher and minimum 18K taxes and goes north. Million dollar homes start at 25K taxes, most more. Not a place to live if you want a 401K or spending money. I'll take NJ shore, in NY Suffolk, Orange, Dutchess, NYC Bouroughs (best deals and cheapest taxes) or move far away like Philly or PA.

Bergen county, ~1940's house 3Bdrm 2bath, not remotely "special", worth ~$500K give or take $25K, $9K in property taxes

Sounds about right...maybe a little lower (400-450K) now with the lousy market. Anything that old will need a nice wad of $$$$$ for updates (pipes, roof, furnace, outside/inside), maintenance and reparis. Taxes not too bad considering, better than most in the NY/NJ metro area. I guess thats about 1/4 acre lot and a just ok school system.
