Merck Announces 14,000 Additional Layoffs

Fraizer announces acceleration in footprint and staffing plan to achieve additional $427 Million in cost savings for the 4th Quarter of the 2013 fiscal year. The Pfizer metabolic health division will be closed with a resulting reduction in headcount of 5,000 and an additional 9,000 reduction across the Eli Lilly and Amgen sales and marketing groups. Fraizer plans to recognize the cost savings in the 4th quarter while acknowledging that the force reductions may not occur until 2014, if at all. When asked if how the Pfizer, Eli Lilly and Amgen reductions would result in cost savings for Merck Fraizer explained that expanding the confusion and emotional toll to the competing pharmaceutical companies will allow Merck to reduce promotional spending. He indicated that the "Fraizer Plan" should result in Merck world dominance by 2016.

The reality of what Merck is doing is not as funny. Merck plans on dumping 50+ percent of its' sales force and will replace them with Incentiv reps. In addition, the Merck plan is to hire a "fleet" of MADs Medical Acct Directors (MDs, Pharm Ds and PhDs) that will call on Fed/State Payors, GPOs and large hospital systems.

The VPs have convinced the Board of Directors that they are the smartest people in the industry. They are convincing the board that US physicians have no autonomy to generate prescriptions anymore. They will divert attention from their own ineptitide by TRANSFORMING merck into a new business model founded on cheap Inventiz labor and a skeleton crew of MDs.

This diversion will give the VPs enough years to continue to milok merck fro another 3-4 years until the EXPERIMENT falls on its face.

Yeah, and the MDs and PhDs will surely be so effective. I have seen in some sales positions in my career. They are SO used to be in charge and make decisions that they become totally inept when they have to convince without the power to make decisions and drive the agenda. There was a time all drug reps were pharmacists but the industry found out that knowing data was not the critical skill needed to sell. Will be interesting to watch though. Won't last.

Yeah, and the MDs and PhDs will surely be so effective. I have seen in some sales positions in my career. Merck is definitely laying off at least 20% of their employees to the tune of approx. 16,000 people...No idea on the other companies.
