Memo to managers regarding outlier salary audit

My manager shared with me that an email went out last week to managers appraising them of representatives on their teams whose salary was identified as being below the 'benchmarks' in comparison to their peers. For those reps identified, there will be a salary adjustment above and beyond the annual 'merit' increase.

Does anyone have any further intel on this? It's not customary for HR to dole out extra money above and beyond the annual pay increase - especially these days!

Yes, a friend in Oncology referenced it as well. Is it really an effort towards pay equity across the sales force or perhaps an action taken in response to the that long drawn out gender discrimination lawsuit? Either way...interesting

We don't have a R&D department. Just a bunch of idiots. Simple, we give them a raise so they are equal then fire them 3 months later because they are also idiots. It's not like our budget will increase.

More deadwood layoffs.

Can confirm R&D strategy. lab mannequins posing for pictures when VP walk through. Next layoff in May.prepare for mega merger

R&D hasn’t done SHIT for the last 15 years. Where are the new drugs? Drug developer scientists gone long ago. Leaders left are academics, process nazis, and physicians turned green horn scientist. others are deadwood just trying to float until they get a package. Roger using keytruda money to extract more from keytruda until his retirement making only way out in 5 year another mega merger with one of our retarded cousins (Lilly, GSK.......)

Unfair post, from someone who hasn't worked in R&D
There are many scientists working very hard trying to evaluate drug candidates and they do it, in part, to help improve human health. This is the rewarding part of the career.
It's true there are some who talk more than do and are only focussed on progressing their careers. Look at those with VP title.

Assessment is done periodically by department because HR only does some every year. It's a lot of work and also significant cost. Salary bands are so wide that one has to be very very low to fall below the bottom amount in a given band. Generally happens because that person was hired in on the lower end of the salary range. Typically older staff get smaller raises and focus is on giving better raises to younger staff, more recent hires. Unless of course your in the 5% top talent category.

unexpected salary result

Another problem is promotion gender bias in departments. It swings both ways, some are heavy with senior male management and others are heavy with female management. The attempt to achieve diversity balance is poorly executed and most productive talent is frequently overlooked. If you're in a bad situation, talk to your manager in a respectful way but you should look at other opportunities within Merck or at other companies because the chances your department will change during your career lifetime, is almost zero. This is because you're probably in the 95% which are not considered top talent.

Don't post. No one cares what you think.

Please explain the 95% talent and 9 box grid. These are fantastic things that I don’t fully comprehend.

95% of talent will not make it to retirement without being laid off. When your home is foreclosed, Merck will provide you 9 boxes to place your belongings in and move them at no charge to a Merck storage cage, conveniently located on your Merck site, inside vacated and pre demolition campus buildings. In exchange for 10% of your pension per month, you can store your belongings, and sleep in the cage, completely off the grid.
