Medical Scientific Liaisons

Here's an example of how dirty this company is. They hired a few people under the guise of Medical Scientific Liaisons to promote Photofrin off-label in the Cholangiocarcinoma and Head and Neck cancer markets.

Here's the kicker: THEY ARE INCENTIVISING THEM BY VIALS SOLD IN THEIR RESPECTIVE TERRITORIES. THEREFORE, THEY ARE REWARDING OR DISCIPLINING THEIR MEDICAL LIAISONS BASED ON OFF-LABEL SALES (YES, SALES!!!)!

Don't they realize they are jeopardizing the careers and freedom of these employees? If someone catches wind of this they'll be trading their Scrubs for prison jumpsuits.

Someone notify the FDA! These people are off the "Stupid Meter" chart!!!!

Measuring the Value of KOL Interactions

"One enduring problem is in finding an appropriate way to measure the impact of interactions between medical science liaisons (MSLs) and KOLs. In part, this is a matter of regulation: Because MSLs can’t be treated as sales reps, it is dangerous to try to assess them the way you’d assess a sales rep—by number of prescriptions written as a result of their actions. But even without regulation, that sort of metric would seriously misrepresent the nature of the relationship between MSLs and KOLs—a relationship that is based on science, mutual collaboration, and engagement, and tends to evolve over longer periods of time than interactions with traditional reps. The thought leader interaction is a process; as such, it may not yield the same kind of immediate, measureable results seen on the commercial side of the company."

It's my understanding that the CEO would state to the MSL, "You are not MSL, you're really sales."

I believe the FDA has been notified. When they contact me to serve as a witness, it will be after their conclusion of having researched my thumb drive. I have my thumb drive ready to submit as discovery, which has all the e-mails saved. Let's not hide the culprits with initials. Many of Brad Herrmann's e-mails are incriminating. Many were sent directly to me asking to either thank a doctor for an off-label utilization case, or to deliver a message to such doctor. Brad, I know you read these posts. It can all be found in your Outlook sent inbox, and the FDA may soon have their hands on my thumb drive to investigate. You should not be the fall guy here. Your reluctance to stand up for what is legal and ethical may be your demise.

Sharon Ayd is ultimately responsible for this arrangement with the MSL's; no doubt, pressured from the top by Guillermo. Either she's too ignorant to know any better, or, lacks the courage to take a stand and do what's right.

However, nobody at this organization, Herrmann, Altman, Wielgos, etc. has the leadership or courage to stand up to the Colombian Dictator CEO and take a stand for what's legally, morally and ethically correct.

Here's what tends to happen:

Once the Feds get involved, the finger pointing begins IMMEDIATELY. Loyalty becomes a non-existent word. Nobody wants to take the fall since it can ruin careers. Usually, these matters are settled with a significant fine. Small companies will generally shut down their operation and file for bankruptcy to avoid paying the fine. I am going to monitor this particular circumstance. Be aware, the FDA immediately researches Cafe Pharma as soon as they are notified of possible violations. And as soon as they gather enough evidence to file charges, they proceed fast and furious so that records are not destroyed during the execution of a search warrant AKA "RAID."

The east coast MSL was fired a couple weeks back because she spoke up about feeling uncomfortable for being paid commission based on sales numbers. She also had serious issues with all of the off-label focus. I hope she recorded the meetings she had when she expressed this uneasiness. She could have quite the lawsuit!

At the very least, the FDA should interview her as a part of their investigation.
The way she was treated in the end was appalling. The people running this show are classless.

This goes to show that Guillermo's sole purpose for hiring MSLs is to camouflage sales activity for off-label promotion. I applaud the MSL for defending the ethical standard of her title. Although, it consequently got her fired, she departs with dignity and honor.
