March layoff targeted the older employees

Pls share if you are the older employee who got laid off. It seems a pattern to drive the older employees out and replace them with the younger and cheaper employees, regardless of the talent, experience and performance. If you are over 50(especially for PHDs), plan your move ahead. Do Not be loyal or work too much , it’s not worth it.

I'm not at Amgen anymore nor was I in the field when I was, but I agree that Amgen has a very, very ageist culture. I would go even further to state they don't want anyone there who is past 40. I don't know if it was even about saving money, since Amgen doesn't pay well over all.

Those who are 40+ and were recently laid off need to look into filing a group complaint for age discrimination.

Lots of veterans with greater than 20+ years were targeted, they rewarded loyalty with a cardboard box and told them to fill their personal belongings and get out.

Amgen has been directing management to hire "Early Career" people, who don't have any experience. Referrals of people more highly qualified are ignored, to hire younger people camouflaged as saying "Early Career"

Too many older employees who didn’t even get paid good were kicked out from time to time and there were no other similar research jobs nearby because of the isolate location of its headquarter. Company knows it’s harder for the older employees to find jobs, so it targets the older employees for them to work long hours. Ppl who still work there have to be aware of this and don’t overload yourselves with work. If you are over 45 or 50, update your resume.

The only way to make DEI metrics is to accelerate the attrition of YTs.

Just because we aren't ramming DEI down your throats anymore doesn't mean we aren't working at it behind the scenes.

The matrix will continue to improve.

When a company cut the tenures in R&D, it delivered a msg that the company may not want to spend much on research anymore. Sometimes spending billions buying the other small ones could let it harvest some rat poisons instead of real drugs.

Amgen used to be a great company to work for, but recent years the Amgen culture is turning very negative. Many great benefits are now gone. Amgen is notoriously discriminate against older employees that are older than 50+. They are quietly try to give them very difficult time and don't matter how good they are doing their jobs. Amgen allowed supervisors to nitpicking and find ways make lives difficult for these old employees and give them very bad reviews. They are always on the look for ways to weed or forcing out older employees. I am not surprise to see a class action lawsuit against Amgen HR practice in the future. As a former employees for over 30 years I have seen it all.

AWho cares - take your box and move on. If you like working for Amgen (or like the paycheck) enjoy the ride while it lasts. If you don't like it or fear for your job every quarter, find something new, but realize there is no such thing as job security. Forget the employment lawyers, waste of your time and life is too short.

I'm over 50 and moved on from Amgen years ago because the culture didn't fit with my career goals. Amgen was and is a great place to work, but many there feel entitled. It's a job, there is no loyalty, it's your career so take charge of it and don't let Amgen or any employer control your life.
