If I knew in 1992 what I Know - I would have:
1. Gone to work for the government is some capacity. Boring yes, but the few workers you see in their 50s-60s are government workers. Seldom laid-offs, union representation and zero accountability and guaranteed retirement and healthcare. The pay is pretty good too.
2. Explored the trades such as electrical or plumbing.
3. Stayed in a little starter home and not moved up.
4. Bought a duplex or apartment building(s)
5. Saved every nickel ever made (I do have debt or credit cards)
6. Gutted up and jumped at 40. It would have made 50 a lot easier.
I believed in 1998 I was going to be well off by retirement age. My friends and family were in awe of the travel and bonuses.
Today, those friends that were in awe have had far greater career satisfaction, longevity and wealth accumulation.
Not griping. Just a reality.
