3-5 ys. no growth in us mkts dollars. Global dollars coming from somewhere else.

Us sales forces and internal support will shrink in 2 ys. or less

cymbalta, zyprexa, evista, gemzar patent expirations will be catastrophic.

Early retirements, vep's, FDE's and yes lay-offs coming, they have too.

Strategic downsizing across the board coming here by January.

Safest place in US is oncology and diabetes.

Bio medicines will look like canada.

No merit increases till 2014 maybe.

Promotions will slow, bonuses will evaporate.

Pipeline, well FDA is not and will not approve much.

Sunshine act, access, reinbursement, medicare/medicaid spending caps- its over for us.

Bad economy and health care reform equal big problems for lilly

Downsizing coming!

Downsizing coming!

I heard that Zyprexa represents a disproportionate fraction of the Lilly profit (i.e. 25 % of sales but 33+ % of profits) so the loss of this one is particularly devastating. Can anyone confirm this?

Humalog is also going to lose patent in next few years, and at least one company is preparing a generic version. Biocon from India is developing generic Humalog and Lantus, and signed agreement with Pfizer to market these in US. So rather than reclaiming market share in US insulin sales, Lilly is destined to fall even further. It is a sad state for the company that first brought animal insulin and then recombinant human insulin to market.

With the first 5500 job cuts due to wrap up this December, one can't help but expect additional substantial cuts to come in the near future. I think this is particularly true when many of the eliminated positions are not really eliminated but instead have been shifted from Lilly employees to contractors (e.g. facilities support staff now working under Johnson Controls).

Yes, the '5500' number is truly farcical; it has already well exceeded that. Consider, over 10,000 headcount has been ADDED in communist china and in India. Plus the expenses paid out in severance have exceeded $250 million, so factor this into future cuts that must occur to make up for it.

The economic 9/11 of lilly continues without end.

The worst part of the Lilly Armaggedon is that it was completely forseeable. Everyone could see the patent cliff approaching, but few decisions were made that could have minimized the impact. In fact, it was almost like the entire company buried its head in the sand for several years, rather than face the obvious problems.

So sad, another venerated American company is run into the ground by greed and incompetance at the top.

I saw it coming, but I didn't bury my head. I buried my treasure. Over $500 million to be exact. When the disaster comes, I'll be prepared. Keep the FIPNET vision alive while I'm gone. $$$JL$$$

What about the pipeline? You know, Carol Bartz is available to take the helm, if necessary.

Your logic is understandable concerning a number of the items listed above. The question is where do you get the info concerning strategic downsizing specifically in January or VEPs,early retirements ect...

Let's see, I was with Lilly for 20 years and was part of the 5500 reduction. I am a medical assistant now. Insurance denied a prior authorization for Apidra stating the patient must try humalog or novalog first. The doctor told me to pick which one. . . Of course, I picked novalog ;)

"We hire people not just for a job, but for their whole career."

This is how Lilly and Corporations get their way always. They don't put things in contracts, they just promise you the world and drain you until you are empty. Then when you ask about your "career", they say this is an at-will employment state. Heads Lilly wins, tails you lose! If having a contract is better for them and bad for you, they will have one. Want to amend your employment agreement? Corporations say "Hit the sidewalks!" You will like it Citizen! If you don't, leave!

which is why you must hoard original data in your own archive, kept in your safekeeping; make what few patents they have even more difficult to defend. Go to opposing counsel and offer to be an expert witness, exposing all the holes and dirt.
