Germany was in many ways the cradle of the pharmaceutical industry, which then grew into an interconnected, world-wide enterprise responsible for many of the 20th century's great strides against disease. But today, German policies place the pharmaceutical industry's future progress at risk, bringing unintended consequences not only for investment and employment but, more importantly, for patients. The way out of this potentially tragic irony begins with dialogue between industry and government in Germany—and a commitment to returning the country to its status as an exemplar in the pursuit of human health.
The company I lead, like all pharmaceutical companies, depends ... on vast improvements by progressive governments to improve access to costly medicines by imposing price controls by greedy pharmaceutical firms whose main interest is to provide fat dividends for fat cats on Wall Street primarily.
