Life After RX lay-off

I was laid off for several months but I was able to land on feet with a Fortune 500 medical company selling Medical Supply & Equipment! I was able to keep the same benefits (Good base salary$70k, Co. car, Credit card, phone, etc) but mostly importantly it's a true professional sales job! I get monthly commission and quarterly bonus base on goal attainment! I get commission dollars on everything sold, receive bonus on GM (gross margin) dollars, and Year-end bonus up to $35K.

I'm calling on CxO of hospitals & large clinics providing them with real business solutions rather than a magic pill. There are no DMs here b/c it would be a waste, we report directly to RM. In other companies in healthcare, they really value you as a salesperson. Here The average rep tenure is 15 years. That's unheard of in Pharma! If I wasn't laid-off, wouldn't have found this opportunity! There is life after Pharma. You just have to change your mentality that Pharma resume and skills are somewhat worthless in a REAL healthcare selling environment! Good luck!

Sincerely,

Sales Gal from the South

Good for you!! I suspect there were many of us who not only landed on our feet, but are doing much better without the sceptre of no job looming. Most of the 2010 layoff that I am in contact with are doing as well or better, and the stress level is way down.

Good for those who landed on their feet. It's been 9 months since the layoff and I still have yet to find work. Not even looking at the Pharma world for work. Looking for jobs in other marketplaces...but for now living off the govt and my investments.

Good for you, but as others note, for every one of you, there's 10 non-success stories. The job market sucks and it is what it is until it changes. Also, the older you are the more the odds are stacked against you.

I am sorry to hear this. I am betting that you are a white male between 40 and 50? Am
I right?

I am right there with you so don't feel bad...Glad I saved up diligently for the day I knew was coming...I had over 20 years in with Big Pharma but could see the writing on the wall...Those who ecouraged me to stay until I got laid off, don't get the fact that I was either going to get an ulcer, lose my sanity, or drop from a stroke or Heart Attack...

When Big Pharma wants an old guy (or gal) out, they pretty much get their way...they hold all the cards and can make ones life so miserable. They know that everybody has to punch in phony calls every day and every week...THey can get you for that any time, and that is why they make it impossible for you to really achieve what they ask....

what a toxic industry...i am sorry I ever wasted my time with it....

Also let go in downsizing. 60+ male. Earned PharmD while @ Novartis so able to get a job immediately, am now buying my own business. Key is to invest wisely and use any resources available. Do not think you will not be next on the block. Those are the refugess that are still not working.

OP here.

It's tough out there! Please don't get discourged. Fortunately many of us have sales exp from other industries. Used that to gain employment. Pharma sales will only take you so far. You can do it! My heart goes out to everyone. Keep trying, networking, posting your resume, etc.

Thanks for the positive encouragement! Do you recommend any websites in particular? How did you get connected with your new position? Thanks again and Congratulations! :)

Also consider working for a large medical operation in promotion, or for a managed care company as an analysist. If you have the credentials you can also work in R & D at major medical centers.

I can't get an interview. Late 40's, applying everwhere, so discouraged I don't know what to do. Even networking contacts won't call me back. Have given up on medical sales of any kind and looking to other industries.

The future does not lie in pharma sales. Those who have found success have made their own career path and are not tied into any industry. This limitation will hold you back much more than your age or gender. Look at the industries that are trending, buy into those businesses, or join a partner. You will make more money than you ever thought possible.

There are plenty of jobs, just not in your area. Suck it up and move. There are $100k jobs all over the Northeast
