Life After Merck

Life after Merck … so here is my story. I joined Merck in 2000. The hay day of Merck. Big pods, 3 products in your bag, long training where it the stakes were high if you failed a test with a 90%. But it was a great place to be with great people. In 2010 my number was up in a big layoff (there were several layoffs before this). I was sad to leave a place and people I loved. Slowly over the past years I’ve watched my friends one by one and no fault of their own get pushed out. Right sizing, new business models or whatever BS they told you why it was happening. Yesterday, I learned the last person I started with was gone after 25 years of service. My heart was sad for what the once mighty, great Merck has become. So why am I writing this you may ask ?? It is because there IS life after Merck! You will find a place in or out of the industry. It’s okay to grieve or celebrate this new journey. I’m so sorry this happened to you. Good luck on life’s next steps.

Nicely said! Despite the imposters who will post here with a damning or contradicting view, I encourage everyone to be proud of what you’ve been able to do while at Merck. It has been, is, and will continue to be a great company. External dynamics are out of your control. Take time then take your experience and the Merck pedigree and open the next chapter. Most often it will be even better. And remember…without Merck you might not even have been given that next chapter.

Mainly true but to somewhat disagree. I've tracked the people who have been let go over the years. I'd say 50% remain in pharma at a reputable company. The other 50% stop working altogether or work outside the industry. It really demonstrates that half the staff are dead weight just going through the motions. Others are to lazy having to start over with little vacation and actually have to work. If you are at Merk and are a hustler, you will resurface at a real pharma company, the others are exposed. We all know who the slackers are.

I hope you crash and burn. Now is not the time for slacker/hustler bs. People are facing some real stress in their lives.

Well, I was correct in my prediction that I would be laid off. I actually raised my hand, so they honored that. All that being said, I guess I am retired. Wish I could have stayed. It was just to much for me to risk for the future. I sure wish everyone the best. Merck has been so good to me and my family. No complaints here. Love and respect to you all!!

The "hay day" of Merck was long before 2000. Mid to late 80s if anything...it all started heading downhill in the early 90s...amusing that you think it was a "great place to be" at that time...
