Does anyone in Novartis understand that we just want to be set free! Why delay it? You know that when Diovan goes generic half of us will be doom? Why wait?, set us free know and save yourselves some cash.

You know you can quit anytime right? Plus, if you expect to avoid more than a year of unemployment you might want another job lined up instead of hoping for some severance package.

Excellent points! If you don't like it, be a man and quit instead of pussing out and waiting on some lameass severance package. If you're really smart (quite doubtful), getting another job FIRST will make it all academic!

Nothing is lame about the package. I heard you get free insurance for a year and plenty of money. I would like a few months off and I will have no problem getting another job unlike you who probably couldn't get another job if you tried. Geeezzzz

Face the facts smedley, you live paycheck to paycheck and the only way you could afford to spend time off the job is to get fired. Poor financial planning on your part smedley, relying on getting canned to take time off. But you are a pharma rep and we don't expect a lot of critical thinking and planning from you smedley. And you have lived up to the expectation.

KEEP THINKING YOU'LL GET ANOTHER JOB, DO YOU READ THE NEWSPAPERS? OH YEAH THAT'S RIGHT WALMART IS HIRING

The market is brutal right now. Very good reps who were advancing their careers into specialty, oncology, it doesn't matter. They are out of work and out for far longer than any severance package covers. In addition to your bills once the severance runs out, do you have any idea what one month of cobra runs for a family? Hoping to be let go and coasting for a few months is a pipe dream especially for those in primary care. You'll be sweating and frantically trying to find a job because it won't happen in a month or two, no matter your record or how good you are, or even if you are located in a great market. Those days are done. Specialty (real specialty) reps are taking a year or more to find a new job. Even managed care, account management, and national accounts takes more then 6 months these days.

Seriously, if going out on severance and thinking you'll be 'on paid vacation' a few months and then will find a new job is your plan you are in for a very rude awakening.

This poster is 110% correct. If you get canned from novartis, it will likely take you one to two YEARS to get another job. Just as likely you will take a pay cut of 20-40% in your new job since we're all over paid.

COBRA costs several hundred dollars a month and your severance and unemployment will not cover that and your living expenses.

Oh yes - one other thing - do you really understand that you'll have to get your own vehicle once they take the company car back? And you do know that costs real money, right??

So if you want a vacation that bad, go for it. Remember it will be a costly one!

Just a little perspective as one of the casualties of the last cleansing--it is NOT difficult to get a job if you have planned throughout your career. It may not be as pharmaceutical hack, but there are plenty of jobs. If you have an MBA, medical degree of any kind, or a fat roladex, you will be working. I was employed in January and I am a male in my 50's

Indeed. Many jobs are available at your local Panera. Buy your own car, buy your own insurance. But you won't technically be unemployed.

Oh yes, I WOULD like chips with my sandwich, thank you.

Also lost my job in December. Went to work in Feb for $120,000!!! Not every loser needs to rely on a dying industry. Like the other poster said, if you are well educated and well connected, you will have a job

WHERE DID YOU FIND A POSITION? I'M A 55 WHITE MALE AND I WAS TOLD TODAY BY A FORMER MANAGER, THAT I DON'T FIT THE PROFILE AND BE PREPARED TO NEVER FIND ANOTHER JOB.

And just HOW OLD is this "former manager"? Because one of these days, he/she is going to be in the same position. Also, what profile are they looking for?
LOOK OUTSIDE OF THIS INDUSTRY! I just read an article yesterday that said branded meds will only see a 0 - 1% growth between now and 2016. THIS IS NOT A GROWTH INDUSTRY!!!
Keep your head up, keep looking, don't let these a$%hole managers get you down. Something somewhere will shake loose.

It took me two months to find a job, a non-pharma job that is paying me thousands more than I made at Novartis. I paid cash for my vehicle, supplied by the severance payment. I thoroughly enjoyed the time off to recuperate and spend time with the fam.

Remember the cup can be either half empty or half full. It is what you make of it. I'm not trying to minimize this, or make it sound oversimplistic, but it can be done! Everything has worked out to MY ADVANTAGE!!!!!

Many of you will be glad when your time at Novartis ends!!! Start preparing now, and you will be fine. I was totally unprepared and had a false sense of security, and am now better off in every area of my life.

I agree with the above poster. I am in the large fraternity that lost our jobs but I have been preparing for this since the onset of Medicare D. At this time many experts predicted the downfall of the pharmaceutical industry and we are seeing this now. I held out until I could get the severence, but had a job in line that I was able to transistion into quickly. I used my severence to buy another vehicle, started my new job, and am not only making more money, I am working less and worrying much less. Yes, I was one of the fools who actually worked when I was employed @ Novartis but this energy was recognized by the corporation where I am now working.
