Layoffs Confirmed at Abbott - January 2015

With the announcement of earnings this past Thursday (January 29, 2015), Abbott laid off 45 in Diagnostics R&D (mostly in Lake County), approximately 30 in Molecular, and also had a re-org in Point of Care (although not sure how many people were impacted there). Also heard that manufacturing plant in Dartford, England is being closed down. Usually, when layoffs occur, Abbott has historically indicated in their earnings release that an "undisclosed" amount of layoffs took place, but there was nothing in the earnings release. No other media has picked this up either (not the Chicago Tribune, not Crains), so this has been kept very quiet. Interesting that when McD's laid off 100 people at their corporate HQ this past week, this was reported immediately in the media (perhaps because the CEO was also stepping down), but keeping layoffs totally secret seems to be the new normal at Abbott...

What makes you think Abbott's outsourced/eliminated positions are worthy of print ? You sales reps are delusional. Abbott doesn't owe you anything! You're all "At Will" employees.Speciality reps are more secure. Everybody else is a dime a dozen. There's no need for reps, who are like Dinosaurs. Those good old day are gone forever. Anybody who enters this industry today is a Real Sucker ! The old timers on here do all the bitching because their time has come yet they fight it The Newbies on here are the Suckers

It is interesting that some on here claims there are all these new products in the pipeline. Yet I keep seeing layoffs in R @ D. Perhaps Abbott is buying another Company with the Products they like and simply overseeing it (Put the Abbott Logo on the product) ?

Yes they have and are buying new companies. Abbott cannot internally develop anything because it is beauraucratic procedures and compliance obsessed quality function run everything. They will systemically dismantle their core R&D. They can pick up engineers as part of acquisition.

Also all internal innovation is stifled by the Abbott political culture. Decisions are often made not on good ideas but on the political correctness of the individual. Also good ideas are often stolen by those who have the political power. Thus good creative individuals are suppressed, kicked out, or they just leave. I know, I work here.

The only new ideas out of Abbott are purchased.
