I am a laid off pharma rep and looking for an opportunity in sales. I came across the posting for Key Account Executive for south suburbs in Chicago. Can anyone tell me whether position is still open? Is this strictly a service position or sales and service? Any feedback please?

Very difficult role with a low base. You are responsible for retaining the revenue for a group of clients, so you put out all the fires. Not sure about the Chicago area, but in other geographies client-related errors are numerous and it all falls on your shoulders. I think it would be too big of an adjustment coming from big or small pharma.

It is not a difficult transition intelligence wise from pharma but it is certainly a step down in pay, respect, and the amount of BS you will have to deal with. The pay may be some what comparable on paper but when you take all the hours and amount of work, it isn't close. Most people didn't even go to college that work here by the way. It is 80% service and 20% sales. you will get tons of daily emails, phone calls, and paper work to deal with which is usually generated because of the daily fires you have to put out. You will regret not staying in pharma and coming to this cess pool. Labcorp is amateur hour compared to even low level pharma companies. It is basically the walmart of the lab industry

The pay is not comparable on paper. Base is only 50-55K with another 20-25K in commissions. These commissions are not gauranteed. You only need to lose one decent account to wipe that out.

I did say some what comparable.. Commissions are never guaranteed anywhere. Pharma is no different with managed care, step edits, tier 3 status etc. The KAE role can best be defined as "all the shit rolls down the hill to you and the money goes up".. Not a good job at all and an even worse company to work for.

Thanks for the clarification, but the comp is neither somewhat nor comparable. I’ve worked in both and there is a 20-25K difference in base salaries. Of course commissions aren’t guaranteed, but my point was, in order for the two to be comparable (or somewhat comparable) they would have to be.

KAE is a good position for non-medical sales reps to break into medical sales, or an inside sales (or other non-sales role) to break into outside sales. It’s a way to get “healthcare account management” on your resume for future considerations. But that’s about it. See Shit metaphor above.

Point taken.. I agree.
