Just my opinion: Much of what one reads on this board needs to be taken with a grain of salt, perhaps two grains. Like the writings of a disgruntled juvenile usually on a bathroom wall, much of what is written here is meant to mislead the reader, some of whom might just believe it without thought or investigation.
Novartis is no different (in my opinion) from any other large company. In many ways management of an organization such as this with much of management non centrally located provides for some difficult situations. FLM's become lords in their own little Fiefdom and the vassals bow and scrape to maintain their right to raise their goats and till their fields, albeit with a heavy payment to the lord if they wish not to be cut in the next downsizing of the Fiefdom.
The most unfortunate part of this scenario is that the vassals often find themselves at odds with one another and all vying for the approval of the lord. It can be especially bad when all the vassals are tending the same goats and the same fields. There will always be those who work hard and those who are along for the ride. It is an unwise lord who fails to recognize the strong goat herders and field workers. Those lords who fail to recognize the best goat herders will soon find themselves overthrown by the forces from nearby Fiefdoms as their Fiefdoms collapse and are eliminated.
So Lords and Ladies, the moral of this story is to know your goat herders. Just because a goat herder kisses your regal ass does not mean that they are the one's tending to the herd. Your regal behind may one day find itself back in the field herding goats. Be careful where you step.
Never let the bastards get you down.
