Jumping from Specialty Pharma to IMS ... good move?

Currently working as a specialty rep and was contacted by IMS regarding a consulting position. What are the pros and cons in leaving pharma and going into this side of the business? I'm currently making above 100k and get 401K, pension, bonus, expense account, total car package but job security has become an issue in my division. Would it be worth it to move?

Recruiter told me salary was fantastic and would compensate me for my move and lack of car. Has anybody ever made the jump and what have been your experiences?

No company is immune to layoffs (especially IMS), so just make sure your reason for accepting the position isn't security. That being said, IMS is good company operating in a rapidly evolving and shrinking industry.

At the risk of getting flayed by the masses here, I also think IMS has fairly good and consistent data assets. Their business model is looking to transcend the perception of it being a "data provider" to a consultancy layered atop a mountain of transactional evidence. This has been the hard part; this and trying to sell larger valued consulting projects into companies that are cutting resources and budgets left and right.

Good luck.

Don't do it!!! Stay where you are, the darkside is called the darkside for a reason. You are safe with your specialty position, or at least until you get canned. Then you will get severance. The lure is easy money from the darkside "IMS" and others of it's kind. Med com's, Agencies, and other vendors.
Be real sure before you leave the comforts of Bio/Pharm.

Seeing that management is offering our consultants the "option" of a summer furlough, I don't know that now is the best time to make the move. This company is all about how much revenue you bring in and nothing else. If you are looking for rewards and recognition, this is NOT the place. We are publicly held and you will receive a flogging every 3 months as we close the quarter and management looks to squeeze every last bit of effort out of you for EBA (effort based accounting) projects. Your Christmas/New Year holidays will likely end up being a nightmare as they squeeze you to get that last little bit before the year end. Additionally benefits plan is good as is the 401k but we do not have company cars. We have a car allowance (approx. $300/mo.) along with monthly mileage reimbursement that varies based on the price of gas. We also have expense accounts as well. Most of our consultants are sharp, likable people with a lot of industry experience. I can tell you one thing-you will get a hell of a lot more respect as a consultant with IMS than as a specialty rep. In short, you have most of the perq's of pharma without the bullshit that goes along with calling on doc's But you WILL get flogged every quarter and have an outrageous revenue goal you will be expected to hit.

If this sounds like your kind of place then make the move.

DO NOT even consider working for this company. The leaders are screwed up and no one gives a crap about employees. Yeah, I know it's about profits, but what these idiots don't realize is that if you treat people better, they'll actually work harder. There's no accountability. You've been warned. I would never want to go back to that place - no matter how much they paid me. I left on my own, in case anyone is wondering.
