Joe J: Fix the Problem, and Not Just the Symptoms

I liked his latest interview in the New York Times, but it either illuminated his incompetence at Novartis or was disingenuous at best. If he really wanted to 'fix the problems' in his biggest market (the US), he'd start with;

The insane forecasts that get pushed down by Basel.
The incompetent Senior Leadership that doesn't push back against them because we don't have the right data to take to our customers.
The voodoo that goes into the goaling and incentive plan for the field force.
The product shortages at the pharmacy level.

When is anyone other than the field force accountable for any of this? If Senior Leadership really wants to know why the field is so disconnected from HQ, it's because they stopped listening to us for the last three years. Good luck with your listening tour, maybe someday people will actually take our suggestions seriously. Until then, we'll keep giving you as many green fire trucks as you ask for.

Agree with everything in the post! The Field doesn't trust EH because they have not given us any reason to do so. EH is so disconnected to the Field in every area, from admin duties to selling messages to customer access to expense reporting to moral to ...............

The product shortages at the pharmacy are something that is intolerable as a salesperson. The other stuff is just stuff....stuff we've put up with for years(although it is getting worse). If we can't get product into pharmacies, then we are in REAL trouble! Much like this country, we are void of leadership. Between making the boat go faster and this rah rah guy we've got now, it makes me truly wish for Ludwig to come back!! I realize we keep firing people, but at some point we need some of these people to sell the product and to stock pharmacies! I can do without all of the let's hold hands and try to figure out why everyone's morale is low. This is a prime example. Sell hard to get trial of new med that they can't get at pharmacy because of backorder. Physician has problem, never writes again this year. Forget the efficacy/safety profile/cost factor of the equation. Did you hear me??? Product sold......CAN'T GET AT PHARMACY!!! WOW!

LUDWIG..LUDWIG...LUDWIG!!!

Guess the attrition is becoming tangible for him. Good try, though the interview is missing THE major point: the root cause is the culture of fear, intimidation, and dishonesty coming from the very top. How are you going to fix this one, Joe? I strongly believe you don't want to because this has been quite a successful business model when da man was still around.

You think Joe does not get it? You are wrong. Why do you think a person with his background(non pharma/packaged goods) was given his position? His background is "making the numbers" through efficiencies, ie cuts, downsizing etc. The powers to be new the days of consistent sales growth to make numbers in US was coming to an end. They needed a non pharma person experienced in meeting goals with smaller margins. Most companies relying on two things to make numbers in future, cost cutting and emerging markets (Asia). There will be business in US but many more reductions before stabilization.

I don't give a shit if Joe got it or not. I got it: Novartis is not the place to be. Fix it, Joe, and I'll be back - maybe.

All I need to do is fix it and you'll come back?? Consider it done bro. Things haven't been the same without you and we miss your keen sense of observation around here.
