J&J and Google announce partnership

Game on!!!

Shouldn't be an issue for awhile, but if/when they bring something to market, we'll be that much closer to our next robot.
Didnt Google try making a cell phone once? I don't think that did very well either.

J&J decided that it was easier to develop their own robot with Google than to buy out an overvalued company. It looks pretty bad for Intuitive that someone would rather develop something from scratch than take you over.

any idea how long that takes to get through the FDA? (laughing hysterically)....Nobody seems to get that it's not about the robot and everything to do about the instruments....which take years to develop and even longer to get through the FDA. if they start today, they MAY have something usable in 5 years---with 1 or 2 instruments.....commercially not going to ever be a competitor to a company that focuses solely on one thing.

If they play the 'substantially equivalent' game that ISI normally plays, it will take 6 months to 1 year to get regulatory approval. That's what it takes right now for them to get approval. J&J already has the instrument grips & core technology developed from their Ethicon laparoscopic ones. They have a stapler. If your doc has dropped an instrument on the ground you would have seen there is nothing magical inside except cables, gears and a chip. They can do this in 2 years if they say their robot is substantially equivalent to ISIs.

Where are the J&J trolls now? Can't beat them, join them? This is great news for robotics and robotic reps. And all those ambulance chasers? why are Google and J&J investing in robotics?

Don't be ignorant.

J&J/EES (now rolled into ETH) have been evaluating this space for over 10 years. They know the IP landscape frontwards & backwards three times over. And have more procedural data that informs business cases then anyone.

Remember, they've been around 130 years - and play for long-term. And yes, sometimes short-term execution fails (Acclarent, Mentor, Synthes), but that's because of narrcistic managers looking to move to their next role.

There's a place for Robotics - but simply isn't for every type (or even every patient) surgery.

Blame hospital administrators for pushing it's application as a short-term market differentiator so that they can pump their own income.

The above poster states:

Seriously? Administrators came up with that all on their own??!! No. That is exactly what we told them they needed to do do stay competitive. We threaten them with claims that we will help the other area hospitals take their share unless they buy.

Anyone who has a clue knows that ISI forced this. And, if you ask any administrator that has any knowledge of a robotic surgery platform, they will clearly state the second a viable competitive product is launched they will push their Da Vinci off their roof.

Damage caused by that use will render the service contract void.

Who will start to build up their sales force first? Ethicon to build new business or Intuitive to defend it's accounts?

I'm assuming Ethicon will build I new robotics division, right?

Google was in talks with ISI before they partnered with J&J. ISI employees started getting phone calls when talks broke off though nobody left. Google is dogshit and all their top talent left for companies like Tesla, Apple, and Facebook. Everybody knows this and aren't lured by Google's last decade hype. They might be big on R&D but Glass was a miserable failure and that is crappy consumer electronics. Now they enter the medical robotics field? What a fucking joke.

Google sucks! Fuck those losers and their $368 BILLION company!
